I had just won a successful round of wood chips on the main playground just around the front of the school. We fifth graders received extra recess time come the end of the school year, considering we would be heading off to middle school soon. My friends and I ran down to the baseball diamond, mainly used for kickball or drawing in the dusty sand with our fingers. I was so petite compared to the other fifth graders, that I couldn't see above everybody. All I could hear was two faintly familiar voices, barely apprehendable above the constant chanting of kids crowded around them. When we arrived, the principal asked to see Jack and John first, and she told me that she would talk to me after them. I was truly terrified to the point where my teeth were indeed chattering.
After about 15 minutes, both boys walked out. John strolled over towards me, and sat down. Jack marched right past us and disappeared down the hall. My principal eventually came out as well, and told me that I was free to go.
“What happened?” I asked, as John and I walked back to class.
“He has detention for a week.” John said. “He owned up to everything he did to me, and apologized without being asked.”
“What did he say about me?” I begged.
“He told her that all you did was tell him to stop beating myself up” John told me.
I was puzzled as to why he didn’t tell her what really happened, until it came across me. The first thought to come to my mind was the Ying-Yang sign. The “Yin” part of the sign represents that in all darkness, there is some light. After everything that Jack did, he found some reason to redeem himself. I don’t think that I will ever fully forgive Jack for what he did, and I don’t know if something like this will ever occur again, but no matter how much darkness someone has, everyone deserves the chance to shine their
