8th grade I had not come out yet because I still wasn’t sure about myself. I had kind of had a crush on this one girl. I told her but soon after Autumn, a different girl, had found out and yelled it kind of loud around a lot of people I didn’t want to know. I was really mad about this.
9th grade at the end of the year I got tired of the kids that sat around me, I stared to go the high school. I had some friends there. The first day during 2nd period I had to do a speech over a poem of my choosing. I did a slam poem called Dear Straight People it is my favorite. I tried to look really nice because of this speech. One day I was at her house. We were watching one of her favorite movies. I think it had Love in the title. I love to learn things about people and find out why they love something. This movie was really good. I was really into the movie. At part there’s a Johnny Cash song I think. She said she loved that song. I wanted to listen to it because that just how I am. She tried to kiss me halfway thought the song I was caught off guard. It scared me. So it didn’t happen. She took it the wrong way. She was going to come over to my house the next weekend. I tried to text her Friday night to ask if she still was, she didn’t reply. That Monday she was dating someone else. This added to my stress of being in charge of the German club float which wasn’t done and Frau wasn’t going to be there on homecoming. I met a girl in German club who I had met before but had forgotten. She started to talk to me. Cool, whatever I wasn’t over Autumn like I should have been. That week was one of the most stressful and fun

“A Certain Lady” is a short poem written by Dorothy Parker detailing a woman’s thoughts on her relationship with a mysterious man. The poem is written as a monologue about the woman’s ability to appear happy around the man and his inability to gauge her true feelings. Despite her affection for him, he constantly tells her stories of his exploits with women. While the topic itself seems simple in nature, the relationship in question, as well as the poem itself, is quite complex. Each stanza adds layers of complexity to the poem.…

One of the biggest mistakes you can make? Letting a person, or anything really, have more control of you than you do yourself. And no, I'm not talking about a "Mean Girls" type of controlling. I'm talking about allowing a certain situation affect you, more than it needs to. It was freshman year, I was young and, no doubt about it, dumb.…

Growing up in a Mexican household we have been taught to be pure. Our parents always told us that we should not get pregnant or give ourselves to any man that comes into our life. We as the latino community are left with questions but we were too ashamed or scared to ask them, which led to many pregnant teens and abusive relationships. B. V Olguin in the poem “Boys’ and Sandra Cisneros in her essay “Guadalupe the Sex Goddess” used their teen experiences to show us sexuality within their culture. Teens’ minds start wandering during puberty, like why is hair growing or why are we bleeding from “down there?”…

Pache Vang INDIVIDUAL ORAL PRESENTATION For my Individual Oral Presentation, I will be exploring Harlem Sweeties, by Langston Hughes, and explain the writing techniques used in Harlem Sweeties, as well as his embrace of the bi-racial realities in Harlem, more specifically, black women of different shades. Then connect it to his view of his own race, which is shown in his poem, My People. I will then, compare the poem, My People, to Zora Neale Hurston’s essay, How It Feels To Be A Colored Me, and how Hughes's and Hurston's views of pride in their own race, and their position in society, is similar and/or different from each other. _____________________________________________________________________ - First and foremost, Harlem Sweeties was published in 1921, when Hughes had just begun to know Harlem and the beautiful ladies in…

Preamble: The monologue presented was adapted from the slam poem written by Kevin Kantor, titled ‘People You May Know.” This poem details the insurmountable impacts of stigma surrounding male rape victims and challenges the traditional attitudes of society in such circumstances. In the adapted monologue ‘Paper clip’, a police officer is speaking to a male victim of rape who is hesitant in pressing charges. The monologue explores this issue in the context of well-known cases of female sexual assault and expresses frustration in the lack of media coverage, fear to come forward and anonymity surrounding male cases from a personal and institutional perspective.…
