Personal Narrative Essay: America's Gift To My Generation

Decent Essays
America’s Gift to My Generation America has given many gifts to my generation. The one I am going to focus on is electronics. Some of the electronics I think are super important are the iPhone and Ipod. These two electronics are both made by apple. Back before we had these you had to use a dictionary to spell a word or go find a computer. With these devices you are literally carrying a computer around in your pocket. You just simply click the safari or google icon and type in anything you want to know and in a matter of seconds it will have all the information possible at the tips of your fingers. They have major advantages but of course they have their downsides just like anything. There is not limits on what you can find

It was my first time in America. In 2015, I moved with my family permanently from India. Had few issues moving but managed to solve those issues without any difficulties. I had no clue how it would be; I had heard about it, read it in the newspaper and saw it in movies but never seen it with my eyes. I was pumped to know about how each and everything used to function, how different the American system is from the Indian system?…

Being a first generation American, the eldest of four children, and the first to attend college in my family; There is a lot of pressure on me to succeed and to pave a road where my siblings can follow in my footsteps. Both my parents were in Cambodia when the communist were in power, my dad ran away as a refugee and eventually through the American embassy, got to come to America. He came here speaking no english and with absolutely nothing in his pockets. He told me that a man had to give him ten dollars to buy shoes at the airport because he was boarding the plane without any shoes. Growing up, my parents knew what it was like to be hungry, scared for their life, and to not having anything.…

Unlike many teenagers I didn’t, have a transition period from childhood to teenage years to adulthood, like so many others here in America might have. My life went from a carefree child to being a mature and responsible adult within a matter of months, and here is how it all started. The fact or the matter is that I was born in a refugee camp in Nepal and life wasn’t easy with death and disease looming everywhere. I roamed the streets as carefree as young kid could. Life was normal as I went to school every day, my dad worked countless hours, and my mother stayed home like so many other women in the community.…

To be an American is to be able to choose freely. Acts of terror seem to be more and more common, according to the media. In times of terror and strife the citizens of the United States of America come together no matter what beliefs and opinions we have to defeat the opposition. There is no price to pay for happiness I used to believe I had to work hard and obey the rules to achieve the American Dream. A few years ago, I was promoted to chief executive officer of a company after several years of employment and schooling. I worked over sixty hours a week, I was sleep deprived, and I didn 't spend much time on leisure. Despite that, I had a high ranking position, owned an enormous house, drove a luxury car, and I couldn 't wait for the two weeks of vacation I took every year. Working hard all year gave me some time for pleasure and relaxation.…

The American dream wasn’t how it was described. Coming to America was overwhelming especially coming from a country where school is the only hope in life, went from being told there 's literally money growing on trees to staying in shelters was a disappointment but let 's start from the beginning. People say it’s hard to remember your young childhood but at five years old I, I remembered everything starting when I lived in Egypt with a single mom that had no family around in another foreign country to rise four children on her own not having a job living in a rundown one room apartment with five people, and two bed’s. I remember it like it was yesterday seeing my mom sitting in the living room on the cut up, scratched red brownish sofa…

I had absolutely no idea what they were saying, but I stood there smiling and laughing. The problem with being a first-generation American is that there is always a sense of isolation. Isolation from your peers because of cultural differences, and isolation from your family because of cultural differences; I was always stuck in the middle. At age four, my family and I moved from Hong Kong to America, and I quickly assimilated to the culture here.…

Every year, the whole family gathers. And when I mean ‘ the whole family ’, I mean the WHOLE family gathers for every holiday and because there'd be so many of us we’d sometimes go to the park alternatively. I know, there's a lot of us. But when my family gets together, I get a really happy, warm feeling. The kind of feeling you get when you wake up to your birthday or when New Year's here.…

My vision for america’s youth today is that we focus less on the newest Jordans or the newest iPhone and focus more on issues that affect us because we are the one that inherit this earth. Materialism eats us from the inside out. Our society places significance on what you own—not who you are, it is sad and bitter fact. Many problems may arise and often do when young people embrace this culture of materialism. Lacking the means to acquire the much-valued material things, some individuals develop low self-esteem., especially for those of those of younger age.…

By definition, I certainly classify as a New American, yet I take trouble with the word new. I’ve always been an American even when I legally wasn’t. I became a naturalized U.S citizen at the age of sixteen two days before Christmas. Unbeknownst to me, I was a legal resident until I was awoken one morning and told to head downtown, sign a document, take an oath, and head back home for dinner. — What do you mean I wasn’t American?…
