It was a cool, dry morning when the team rounded up. Our coach had notified the team that we were in risk of elimination. The faces of my teammates were as hopeless a rose in a desert. As a captain, I spoke out and tried to lift our spirits with a speech. Baseball is such an unpredictable sport, I said.…
Chris Linde stated “My job as an athletic trainer is to prevent injuries as much as possible. I also support with strengthening and conditioning, guidance in nutrition and sleeping, and I also make sure the playing area is safe”. When he was young, he always adored being around the athletic trainer. Subsequently being pushed to his limits and fighting through the pain, there was always someone to care for his aches, and pains. She gave him opinions on what to do when he was alone to prevent fatigue, and serious injuries that would prevent him from playing to his fullest potential or limit him from achieving his goals.…
For over ten years my average day consisted of four main activities: school, homework, gymnastics, and sleep. While school breaks or holidays may have upset three of the four, competitive gymnastics was always a constant. Three hours a day five days a week with no off season left no room for apathy. During my years as a gymnast, I learned the lessons I am sure every athlete is taught— dedication, time management, and determination. However, gymnastics taught me two lessons that other athletes fail to learn thoroughly.…
Kaleena Siers Ms. DiSalle ELA7 asfkgsubc I was in my dad’s white pickup truck slowly making my way to gymnastics practice. All I had been thinking about was trying my roundoff back handspring since I woke up. I had just stopped doing physical therapy for my achilles and was really worried about trying my new flip. I kept thinking in my head how things could go drastically wrong.…
Unlike other sports you can literally not be good at wrestling if you are not mentally tough. Now what do I mean by the term mentally tough? Mentally tough means you are able to push past what your mind may be telling you or what your body feels like and is telling you. That even when you have 30 yards left to sprint and your brain and body say you can no longer go you push through and keep going. You rise early to go workout instead of staying in to sleep because you are tired.…
The people I have met because of wrestling is huge, people that I hope I can be friends with the rest of my life. There are a couple reasons why wrestling is…
Do you ever think about the sport you’re really good at, and like doing, then get injured so you couldn’t do it anymore? Neither did I until it happened before wrestling practice as we were warming up when I broke my collarbone. This all started the day after Thanksgiving at wrestling practice. We were warming up playing basketball and if someone didn’t make it you had to start sprinting for the ball.…
An Athlete’s Worst Nightmare Imagine you are going along playing the sport you love, when all of a sudden you hear a pop, your knee gives out, and you are on the ground in pain. This happened to me not once, but twice. After going to the doctor both times, they figured out I tore my ACL.…
The first time I knew I had a talent, was when I entered wrestling at Carmel High School. My talent is that I can accomplish the impossible. In a matter of days, I became one of the best players in my wrestling team. In senior year when I first began wrestling, I lost to everyone on the team. After a week of practice, I accomplished the impossible.…
Personal Narrative Have you ever wanted to try a new sport? Soccer, football, and basketball are all fun, but I wanted to do something new. I came across an opportunity to try fencing and thought that it might be interesting. On my first day, when I walked into the building, I noticed the huge amount of space and heard the coaches yell, “Get ready to fence!”. I could hear the sound from the foils scraping against each other, and echoing throughout the room.…
I was absolutely dreading this day because, for varsity matches, only one person in each weight class is allowed to wrestle. Our varsity wrestler for the weight class I was in was injured so I had to wrestle in the varsity match. As I stepped out onto the mat for the first time, I looked over and began analyzing my opponent: a shaved head, tattoo covered arms, and 200 pounds of solid muscle. What did I get myself into?…
Since the time of the Greeks and Romans, wrestlers have competed both on the battle field and at home to see who will win. Many sports advertise challenging competition similar to that of wrestling, but very few can follow through with these promises. This happens because these other sports do not build themselves on set standards such as mental and physical strength and technique. These important parts of wrestling have set it apart for centuries. As a wrestler, I know that these standards make wrestling not only a sport, but a lifestyle.…
The main goal in wrestling is to pin the opponent, which means getting both shoulders flat on the mat. There are positions for starting off ground game, if you start the round on the bottom. If starting on bottom you must be in the referees position, which is hands and knees must be on the mat at a certain distance apart. The other person is known as the top man, which is the one that starts off with control. Having control means he has control of the bottom person, or in other words the bottom person cannot easily escape and stand…
“Runners on your mark…Set...Poww!” Those were the last sounds I heard during what could have been my last race of my sophomore year in collegiate Track and Field. It was a frisky, yet cool Saturday in April and after a strong performance in the previous indoor and outdoor season (4x100m and 400m), I was determined to continue and uphold my strong form on this day. There is a saying that things do not always turn out the way we hope, but I believe, there is always a positive lesson to be learned from every life event. I love sports.…
The Sport That Made Me As the clock counted down 3, 2, 1 I knew my career was over, but it was one good ride. Playing Chester High school in the Suburban One playoffs at Chester isn’t ideal for any basketball player from Southeastern Pennsylvania; it was truly a blessing and an experience I will remember for the rest of my life. Chester is the hometown of a couple of NBA players such as Jameer Nelson and Rondae Hollis-Jefferson. Chester has also produced other 1,000 point scorers who have gone to lay professional basketball overseas.…
