Personal Narrative Essay About Swimming

The fall of sophomore year I decided to join the high school swim team. I knew it would be a lot of hard work to stay on the team but was willing to put in the extra effort. Since I was new to competitive swimming I started off swimming in the “easiest” events. These included the 50 meter and the 100 meter freestyle. Eventually I became a substitute swimmer that would go in whatever event needed another Hobart representative. This led to me being in the 200 meter more than anything else. Most people on the team to not enjoy swimming any distance above 100 meters. Eventually I would be tasked with one of the most difficult events of them all, the 500 meter freestyle. The first time I swam the 500 free was in Kankakee Valley High School. I was informed that I would be in the event by another teammate on the bus ride there. I of course thought he was joking. There was no way the head coach would put me, a first year swimmer, in the longest event. I could barely swim 200 meters without running out of energy. …show more content…
I was going to swim the 500 whether I wanted to or not. The best/worst part about the 500 is that it takes place in the exact middle of a swim meet, right before diving where the swimmers can take a 15-20 minute break. It means that there is some time to warm up before the event. It also means that I had to sit through five events before my chance to swim leaving me to worry about whether or not I could survive swimming a third of a mile. Sooner than I wanted, the time came for me to prove myself. After a quick pep talk from my coach I stepped onto the block and waited for the start. The whistle was blown and I dove into the frigid water. I was not going for a fast time, all I wanted was to go the distance. At every 50 meters there was a person with a card that told me what number turn I was on out of

I began to train for the fifty yard qualifying swim test that had to be done in thirty five seconds. I was always competitive but never joined a swim team, but instead played volleyball, bowling, and baseball for Lawrence High School. Managing to break free from the first set of waves, I pushed forth into the next set of unceasing five foot waves. With legs bent upwards and arms plunging one after the other in a Michael Phelps mentality to finish the race with swift strokes, I kept my body centered in the middle of my seven foot board just like my grandpa positioned me to do so. With a split second to pause and raise my head to look over an oncoming wave, I made out the face of my grandpa, looking back at me from his own board and grinning at the look of my determined face to get out into the line-up. Eminent to the gray-haired “townies” who create their own spindrift from whipping the tail of their boards high in the air, is a homely beach, Rockpiles.…

However, I believe that my greatest skill comes in Water Polo. I joined Water Polo in seventh grade, because I was too small to be effective in football, and the Fresno heat combined with heavy padding is truly miserable. I naively believed that in Water Polo I would quickly rise to the level of the Star of the team, because I have had a pool for as long as I remember. Unfortunately, as with all sports that I have tried, I lacked any talent, and apparently my swimming skills were not as advanced as I had anticipated. I spent the duration of seventh and eighth grade playing left bench.…

And every time a barrier stood in my way, I used my love of the sport to get through it. When I had a thyroid condition my first year that kept me from being able to breathe normally during any exercise, I dealt with it and powered through. When I got shin splits my second year that wouldn’t let me run at all, I switched to cycling to get my base cardio in. When I got a stress fracture in my low back that kept me from rowing at all later that year, I stepped back. But I still came to every regatta and coxed several races.…

I was nervous and I felt like I was not ready for a meet just after joining the team. Even though I was afraid to race, I showed up to the meet and was told that I was going to run a short distance and the one mile. I started the race with the short distance, it was the 100 meters. As soon as the gun was fired I ran as fast as I could but finished last. I was ashamed of myself, I wanted to quit, but I could not because I believed this sport was going to get me into a higher place.…

If I could go to the Olympics and compete in any sport it would be swim because I am currently on my high school swim team and I feel like it is such an amazing and challenging sport. I have gained a great admiration for all of those who choose to do swim professionally because many may consider it an easy sport but in reality, so much dedication has to go into lowering times and sacrifices like enduring pruned skin, dead hair, and smelling like chlorine must be made. Despite many of the disadvantages swimming for me has served as a great stress reliever and motivator.…

I began to spend more time worrying about my performance than actually trying to improve it. Before I knew it, I had slipped into a hole of swim season depression. I counted the days until it was over. Despite my best efforts to avoid the butterfly stroke, my coach really seemed to think I had a natural talent for it. Naturally, the team’s butterflyer quit and I was chosen to replace her in the one hundred yard butterfly: arguably one of the most hated races in the swim world.…

I look all around me, suddenly, I feel calm. This is an environment that I have come to know very well. My eldest sister played volleyball and swam and my other sister was a swimmer. Therefore, my choice was easy, swim. I initially joined the swim team in order to maintain the Mitchell legacy of Shadow Ridge High School swimmers. While my siblings' participation was a big factor in my decision, I also thought it would be a great way to meet new friends, get in shape and have fun. At the time, this was the extent of what I believed swim would do for me, but as I finished, my fourth year on this team, it was very evident that swimming had done significantly more.…

The Lesson in Quitting For the past 7 years of my life, swimming has played a huge role. Growing up, I had always enjoyed being in the water, and was one of the odd kids that genuinely enjoyed swimming lessons, no bribes required (thinking about it, I wish I had some of those kids in the lessons I teach now). Overtime, it began to feel less like a passion and more like an obligation; something I had committed to that was too late to stop. I was afraid to quit, afraid to disappoint, and trying to be dedicated to a sport I had lost interest in made me start to hate it. This year, I finally decided to drop the sport, and am now embracing the huge change it has had in my life.…

Learning something new can be a scary experience. One of the hardest things I have ever had to do was learn how to swim.
