One day, it was so packed because of $2 Fridays. I was skating and these teenage girls pushed me on the ground, made me bend my wrist back. The costumes were so bright and colorful; with righnstones on them that sparkled like fresh cut diamonds. But my favorite part was when the announcer would call the names of the skaters when they did something extravagant. I knew right then, that I wanted to be a figure skater. My involvement in Basketball and Track has really taught me that if I work hard and strive to do my best, the only outcome is becoming better. I have learned that hard work does and can pay off. During summer of my eighth grade year I was on a summer basketball league, I figured this was the only playing time I would get because the following year I would start as a freshmen. I work hard everyday trying to improve my skills and learning new thing that could help benefit my playing. The edges of my skis slice across the freshly groomed trails while my poles force thrust back propelling my body over and past a steep hill. I continuously repeat this motion hundreds of times, so many that it feels woven into my fabric of a person. The numb fingers, frozen eyelashes and aching muscles from cross-country skiing over the years become routine for how I spend my winters. However the lessons learned from this sport extend past the practices.…

My nerves were on edge, my adrenaline was pumping; I watched our third leg trailing our school’s rival, Hastings, the anchor was up next for our 400 freestyle relay and the only thing that stood in the way of winning or losing the race was me. Immediately I dove in; the sight of my opponent's feet next to me made me swim harder and faster. Coming into the fourth and last lap I used everything that I had left in me to finish strong. Right at that moment, I saw an opportunity and took advantage of it, I noticed my opponent was closing in too early. Sprinting to the wall as fast as I can, I glanced at the time score and saw a bright florescent number one next to my lane, at that moment I was at loss of words.…
