There were two big traditions for my family during the summer months. We would go on vacation together to a little beach town in Florida called Rosemary Beach. The second tradition was a game that we created ourselves. It was called kickball-baseball. It was basically baseball. I grabbed the bat and prepared with a few practice swings before stepping up. I entered a slump to start the game. The first pitch I saw I and hit it straight into the ground and the young, overweight version of myself was thrown out easily at first. However, I noticed that this Win-stud kid who was playing first was standing completely on top of the sandal. My cousin was quick enough to score my groundout and we jumped out to a 1-0 lead. My cousin grabbed the bat and for the second time in the inning smoked the ball over everyone’s head and this time ended up on third. My slump continued during my second at bat. The five foot three inch 140 pound second grader ran over Win-stud like a tractor trailer running into a deer. The ball went flying past him and into the row of umbrellas, but Win-stud did not get up. I rounded the rest of the bases and

As I was rounding first I felt my feet sleep out from underneath me, I had fallen flat on my butt. Embarrassment on my face I got up quickly and ran back to first base. Although I was embarrassed I knew I still had to run the bases. A hard ground ball had been hit passed the infield and had moved me over to second base. I was stuck on second at the end of the inning, nobody moved me around.…

I only had one thought at that moment, and that was to catch the ball.…

I had no idea how I was supposed to hit a ball that was flying through the air. I grabbed a helmet that was clearly too small for my overly large head, and headed up to the plate. I could hear my dad behind the fence repeating, “keep your eye on the ball.” I had one goal in mind; to keep my eye on that ball. The pitcher wound up, and chucked the ball towards me.…
