Personal Narrative Essay: A Trip To The Local Fea Market

Superior Essays
The truck was all set. The coolers were stuffed with cheesy sandwiches, soggy with their exposure to ice, and all the kids were seated and buckled with their faces engrossed to their oversized iPads. Money? Check. Strollers? Ready to go. Large hunting cages? Check. Once a month my entire family plans a trip to our local flea market and I get dragged along. I like dusty vintage records and stained clothing as much as the next guy, but the idea of endlessly walking around small shops for hours on end is not promising. I guess the poorly made plastic jewelry and the extra salt on those 7 dollar turkey legs is somewhat alluring to my family. And I guess the expired foreign dragonfruit shampoo-like products have some new powerful deep cleansing chemicals I wasn’t aware of? Or maybe …show more content…
Although I often disagree with everything my family does and the crazy preparations it chooses to take, I just accept it. If they decide to pack flowering pots and buy a peach tree, I don’t argue, until I am forced to carry it. I have accepted the fact that everyone in my family thinks differently when we come together for the flea market. Everyone has their own individual goals of buying pet ducks, underwater kazoos, plastic jewelry and ancient Aztec cooking pans. These crazy people are my family. Complying is the best I can do whether I like it or not. Although the flea market has a diverse atmosphere that is simply perfect for my family absurd necessities and provides an opportunity for unity, the monthly flea market shopping spree is not necessarily for me. Whenever that first 4am alarm rings I just put on my headphones, stand, watch and hope that I won’t get stuck pushing strollers or carrying the next plastic bag of merchandise. But if I am, I will be proud knowing it won’t be filled with just any ordinary

At the cross section of behavioral economics and ethics lies the blueprint of ethical consumption. As a core tenet of ethical consumption, fair trade ‒ a movement and label for products supplied by producers with fair and safe compensation for their work ‒ behaves as a combatant against human rights violations, particularly human trafficking, and promotes transparency and development for “marginalized” workers. With a 15% global increase in fair trade sales from 2012 to 2013, according to Fairtrade International, a major fair trade certifier since 1997, fair trade has grown in recognition in both consumer and academic circles, spurring extensive investigation into the internal and external components of ethical consumption. The factors influencing…

What is “happiness” and how is it obtained? The word “happiness” is defined as ‘a mental or emotional state of well-being defined by positive or pleasant emotions ranging from contentment to intense joy’. Americans in the 21st century are starting to develop an addiction and obsession of purchasing items that they want, rather than what they need. To the newly developed smartphone, all the way to the brand new Gucci bag that every celebrity owns; we can’t help but being able to own these luxury items to satisfy our needs. I think there are two important appeals that are very well connected to one another. The first appeal would be the main idea as to why hoarders have such a difficult time letting go, and that is because “Memories are attached to objects and in turn we attach ourselves to those objects” (Schutza 257). Secondly, the most important appeal of all would be that the majority of us have become pack rats without even noticing this type of behavior among us “Our homes can become museums of our own personal artifacts” (Schutza 257). We cannot blame ourselves for picking up this type of behavior, after all the media has done an excellent job into talking us to buy useless products we do not need.…

As the holidays draw near, the feelings of warmth and security an individual gets when surrounded by those closest to them are noticeably fainter than they have been in previous years. It seems that as time goes on, the familial aspect of the holidays, especially Thanksgiving, has been watered down in order to make it more marketable to consumers. Also, the day itself is now practically ignored in order to make room for more profitable traditions such as Black Friday. Capitalism, commercialism, and retail together have managed to not only completely change the meaning and story behind centuries old tradition, but are now beginning to eradicate it completely, because they have replaced the important values with their own. The more time and energy…

It was a scorching summer afternoon around three o’ clock PM at J.D Redd Park. I was anxiously waiting in third base for the batter to approach the plate and smack the yarn covered ball just enough for me to make it to the home plate. As the sun hits my face I see the pitcher retract his right arm getting ready to throw it. As I see the ball leave the pitcher’s hand, I breathed in the humid air, making preparations to sprint as fast as I could and make it to the home plate. Before I could even gather my thoughts the ball departed from the pitcher’s hand and into the bat of one of the members of my team.…

It is an aspect of my culture that I have struggled with but now appreciate the most. The power of family and the love that courses through it is a force to be reckoned with. As alien as some traditions of certain family members can be, are we not all immediately at home with their actions and words? The world is a vast playground with more foes than friends, and only few that are family. However, it is the few on the playground that are family, that are there to place a band-aid on your knee when you fall, and there to confront the many bullies that rule the playground.…

My story starts in a basic classroom: posters on the walls, whiteboards full of lecture notes from previous classes, and tables and chairs strategically placed amongst the room. Two tables have been pushed together and around them sat my fellow FFA leadership team members. Our teacher sat at the head of the table and talked without ceasing, as normal, about the myriad of opportunities set before us, and the minimal amount of time we had to do such tasks. He lectured us about all the activities we need to plan and prepare. Moving from topic to topic, in no particular order, our teacher said these words: “I received an email for a new project to advance our community and need volunteers to pursue this.”…

Nothing compares to the flamboyant peculiarity of fairs. These world-wide extravaganzas are among the most bizarre place in this world. Both State Fairs and County Fairs alike use their exotic foods, their new products, and their “cute” barn animals to draw in more people. Walking down the street, performers pop up every minute performing amazing feats of balance, agility, and magic. Even every once in awhile, a lucky guess at your age, weight, or birthday will amaze all the surrounding people.…
