When the time came to take off everyone settled down and put on headphones. For the next 3 hours some people were playing a game, but for the most part everyone was relaxing. When we landed at the airport we got off and everyone was really sore so we all stretched. When I stepped off the plane, that’s when I realized that I came this far to play soccer and I need to take advantage of the opportunities I get and perform. We went to the field where we were playing and walked over. After everyone put on their gear, we started the warm up and stretched. As we walked on the field, I realized this is where the last two months of preparations and all that training that we did needs to be shown on the field at that game and the games following. Brownsville, Texas is the town that I was raised in and can still call home. It was rich with Mexican culture and delectable, greasy tacos but it was still an economically disadvantaged city meaning that there were never enough resources to guide students to better opportunities. Of course, I never knew I was deprived of such an apparent luxury until I came to The University of Texas at Austin. When this realization came, I became frantic because of how behind I felt. I began looking for all sorts of resources and opportunities the university had to offer.…

When I was 16 I moved to from California to Texas. During this time, I assume everyone in Texas wears a cowboy hat, boots, talks in a southern accent such as saying y’all and other such stereotypes. I assume the general understanding of Texas from what I was taught as a kid in movies, music, and shows. Once I moved to Texas that that type of thought was used against me, my classmates assume I probably l go to the beach and surf and have met plenty of celebrities when I lived in California. It was 1981. I had just graduated from high school, and another four-year commitment to “education” was the last thing I wanted to do. The problem was that all those other things required money, and thus a job. Unfortunately, at that time the country was in a severe recession, and the only state that seemed immunized to it was Texas. I had to make the decision whether to leave my birthplace, my family, and my friends or to pursue a new life and adventure over a thousand miles away.…

It was the first day of my second year in Tomball ISD. I walked into my second period, Texas History, with a Mrs. Brough. At first glance, Mrs. Brough seemed to be a little too excited and the state of her desk with several coffee mugs seemed suspicious. It was in this unorganized classroom and with this giddy teacher that I found my love of history. Mrs. Brough was a short and stout woman who never stopped smiling.…

The next morning, Mercy surprised Surina by joining her for breakfast on the sunny terrace in the backyard of her cottage. They enjoyed the leisurely meal to the sound of honey bees buzzing around an assortment of flowers in full bloom lining the edges of the garden. Indeed, the fragrance of the rhododendrons, chrysanthemums, foxgloves, roses, and lilies of the valley intermingled to create a unique heavenly perfume. In the past, Surina’s kinetic pace never allowed her enough time for breakfast other than a hasty granola bar before frantically rushing off to the hospital. In contrast, today she luxuriated in a proper full English breakfast.…
