Personal Narrative Essay: A Trip To A Family Reunion

Decent Essays

I was overwhelming with joy and excitement to see my favorite cousins, Ethan and Austin. That excitement was superseded also by the fact of how mountainous and traverse South Dakota is. I love to climb everything and anything I can, and I have quite the knack for it also being very lean and tall. The lodge we were staying at was very rustic and exquisite. After getting unpacked and settled into our rooms we found Ethan and Austin and proceeded to spend pretty much the whole reunion together with them every day. Sorry, I’m getting ahead of myself. I couldn’t wait to explore everywhere. We had decided, though, that we would swim while we waited for lunch to come. There is a tiny rock island in the middle of lake that we swam out to and tried to climb, but us being too slippery and wet we couldn’t get up. As soon as lunch came I gobbled it down quickly. One: because I was starving from swimming and not eating since breakfast and two: because I wanted to start climbing the giant rock mountain in front of …show more content…
“I can climb down that easy!” I slashed back. “I bet you one dollar you can’t,” he persisted. “Fine,” I said as I held out my hand for a handshake to make the deal. He stopped and stared at my hand for a second and then shook my hand, and I said, “it’s a deal.” Proceeding then to climb down I thought to myself, this is so easy, that dollar is as good as mine. On the way down from the climb, I accidently slipped and cut my knee open a little badly. It was a simple mistake of not making sure my footing was stable before moving my other foot. I limped my way back to him, “alright give me my dollar,” I stated. He simply said, “no I won’t, I don’t have a dollar.” I was so furious I couldn’t talk to him. Looking down I noticed that my knee was bleeding pretty bad so I left without a word to tend to my wound. I can’t believe to this day that I had climbed down that hill all for

The only thing to do was to not look down at the 1,000 feet below me at the winding river. We finally stopped at a small crack in the wall. Our trip leader designated time for reflection on what the outdoors meant to us, and how being in the backcountry has changed us over our past four summers at camp. The vibrant colors and the smell of the air were all things I took note of that I wouldn’t have paid attention to back home. At Lake Ross there were waterfalls and cliffs that were so perfectly formed I could’ve sworn God must have forged them. The location was isolated and surrounded by large mountains. The water was freezing and the sunsets were…
