When I was 6 years old, a moment of my life was completely horrible. My mother and her workers were cleaning around the house. They were mostly mopping, vacuuming, and wiping off the dust off any old furniture” My mother told me “Veté a dejar la Tortuga en la tuba.” (Go and put the turtle in the tub) I heard something completely different than what she told me. The bed sheet was covered with the seemingly endless flow of tears coming out of my depressed and lonely little eyes. My mind was trying to comprehend about what just happened to my life in just 2 whole minutes, shortly after that I heard banging on my door and my mom screaming “Abre la puerta!” (Open the door!) I reluctantly made my room accessible by moving the door out of the way with my shaking hands. My mother was standing outside of the door, furious like I had caused the murder. (Which I did) She then started screaming at me “Porque has hecho eso?!” I looked at her with a blank slate, not knowing what she meant by her statement. I then shouted back at her “Que?! Yo no la hice para que se muere la Tortuga!” (What?! I didn’t do anything to the turtle!) She replied “A que si! Tu la pusiste la Tortuga en la lavabo!” (Yes you did! You put the turtle in the sink!) That’s when I remembered that I did put the turtle in the sink and turned on the faucet. I then slid down the door and started crying more than when I was on the bed. My mother then locked me in her room while she waited for my father to get home. I obtained my punishment which was 3 months of me being grounded. Crying, I buried the body of the turtle in the backyard which we all had cried during the

How do life experiences shape our values? A way life experiences shape our values is when we run away from a problem and later learn something, good or bad, from it. In Tom Sawyer, Tom runs away because he thinks nobody loves him and later learns they do but in their own way. In “Abuela Invents the Zero”, Constancia runs from her grandmother and the fact she is related to her, later she learns she should care about her. An example from my life is when I did something that made my mother scared and I ran inside because I was afraid of getting yelled at, later I knew not to do something like that.…

During my sophomore year, I heard about elections for the president of National Math Honor Society, or NMHS. I was excited as I saw this as the opportunity I had to instill a love of math for my fellow high school peers. Since I had been at the top of my math classes during high school, I anticipated an easy triumph for me, so I imprudently stood idle while my opponents campaigned. Unfortunately, after the voting by my fellow students, I learned I had lost to a junior. I shrank down in my seat and tears formed in my eye, showing my humiliation.…

I struggled to concentrate on the television as my Mom and this strange man passionately embraced one another on the adjacent couch. For some reason which I could not seem to comprehend, the Spongebob rerun did not demand my attention quite like seeing my Mom with this man. My Mom had promised to take me to our favorite Chinese restaurant, but as I watched the minutes tick away on the clock, I became increasingly suspicious that perhaps we were where we would stay for the night. It all started at my grandparents’ house. “Get ready, Dakota!”…

When I was eleven my family took a trip to the Bahamas. We departed DFW airport early in the morning, before even the birds had woken from their slumber. Our plane landed briefly at a small airport in southern Florida where we swiftly exited our large vessel for the cramped, musty quarters of a seemingly ancient aircraft. My family and I sat in the plane for what felt like an eternity with nothing but miles of water as far as the eye could see. As the tiny metal bird descended from the skies a beautiful island emerged from the thick clouds.…
