This morning as I knocked on the door to my fiancés apartment and her roommate Margarita answers the door. I don’t know if it is normal in the Ukraine to let your friends stand out in the cold, but after a few awkward moments she let me in the door. Over the past several weeks I have gotten know Margarita, and though we have extremely different lifestyles, and I have come to admire her adventurous spirit. She has a passion to visit foreign places, she has a thirst for knowledge that few possess and she doesn’t let anything stand in her way.

I know how hard it is to learn another language after spending two years in another country, but attending college in another language is a whole new ball game. In high school she received a silver medal for her academic achievements. She explained that this is the equivalent of going through high school getting only to B’s. She has told us about one teacher in particular who helped her cultivate her desire to learn. Her teacher got all of the students to be involved in school dances and different clubs. When I asked her why she decided to come to college in the United States one of the major reasons was the quality of education available and the different areas to study. In the Ukraine once someone enters college they have to choose a major and they have to stick with it. Margarita said she loves that she can choose what she wants to study here, but still has not figured out exactly what she wants to be. She won’t let that stop her from reaching her goals though. Margarita is constantly doing something. She lasts longer than the energizer bunny. When she isn’t in her room studying she is cooking up some foreign dish. If she isn’t doing that then she is at work. The fact the she can get all of her studying done in a foreign language, and work every day is astounding. She isn’t a perfect student by any means and like any other college
