June 4, 2010, is a day that I will remember forever; it’s a day that taught me to never take life, family, or friends for granted because you never know when something unexpected, bad or good, will happen and impact your life forever. The day started just like every day has for the past month. We started practicing basketball early that morning, with the same routine as always: stretching, running, layups, and splitting up into two teams and playing against each other. Our coach, Coach Joey, was hollering at us as usual to “hustle” or “fight for the ball”. Everyone was giving it their all during practice. Later on that afternoon, my parents and I kept getting updates from friends and my friend’s parents on Rachel. Rachel was transported to Winchester hospital, where they could not figure out what was wrong with her. That night my family and I got awful news, news that we never expected to get, Rachel was not going to make it through the night. I was devastated, Rachel wasn’t just a friend I knew, but she was more like a sister to me I have known her for over half of my life. The doctors said that Rachel had a massive stroke, but they were not sure and still are not sure what from. The doctors think that the stroke was caused by the Gardasil shot that Rachel got in the previous months. Family, friends, and the community was devastated, nothing like this has ever happened to someone so young in our community, all we knew to do was pray, and prayer works.
The day after that we were told that she would not make it through the night. A miracle happened, Rachel was still with us. The doctors told us that even though Rachel was alive, there was a slim chance of her ever walking or talking again. Today, Rachel walks and talks on her own, Rachel even graduated high school, and she was ranked in the top 10 of the senior

The softball team that me, Rachel, and all of our friends played on, all had Rachel’s softball number ironed onto our jerseys and we played for Rachel, and we won for Rachel. And to this day, we still wear our shirts that have Rachel’s number, 42 on the.
Rachel is one of the strongest and most beautiful person, inside and out that I have ever met in my entire life. She is an inspiration, to everyone around her. She has taught me to never get down on myself that that I can accomplish any goals that I set my mind to. To me Rachel is a reminder to be positive and to never have a negative outlook on

Something in me has always known that I was not typical. In this generation, the typical person would graduate high school and then go on to pursue a two to four year college degree.
