I stared in at my catcher, Drew Wessel, beads of sweat fell off my forehead. It was the bottom of the sixth and we were one out away from winning the World Series, he flashed me a two which meant curveball. I checked the runner, got my grip on the ball, and checked the runner again. I lifted my leg and let go of the ball. We were the last game of the tournament, it was August 1st and the daylight was just starting to slip behind the Rocky Mountains in center field.…

Other than that the Cubs lost that game and I didn’t care because all I could think of was going to run the bases. Most teenagers would probably tell you that the beginning of their adulthood was marked by having to do laundry for the first time, or being able to drive alone, or perhaps no longer sitting at the children's table at family events. But for me, it happened this past summer, when I made the very difficult decision that I would not return to Coleman Country Day Camp. To those who were not fortunate enough to have grown up at summer camp, this might not seem like such a big decision to make. But Coleman was my outlet, my second home for ten consecutive summers and spending those two months anywhere else seemed inconceivable to me.…

We watched in silence as our pitcher struck the last guy out, and it was our team’s time to bat again. We watched as the first guy stepped up to the plate, all eyes were on him as he hit his first ball, but, it did go to the outfield, it went up in the air. At this point all eyes watched the sky for the foul, my husband being the 6ft 1in giant that he is only had to reach out about an inch to grab the ball, as my youngest screamed "Daddy got the ball, Daddy got the ball!"…

Well I wasn’t actually smiling and as brutal as I made it sound, it wasn’t as horrific an event now that I look back on it. The incident occurred while I was on Spring Break during my freshman year in high school. My family and I were vacationing in Gatlinburg, Tennessee;which if I might add we’ve been there about eight times since I was seven years old. I remember clearly that day down to the exact temperature.…
