Facing hard obstacles and trying to strive for the best, I am lucky and very grateful to be here today knowing the background that I came from. As a young girl I use to move from school to school after Katrina because we moved around a lot. I was homeless for almost a year so I didn’t really have much of a stable child hood. Years later my family and I found a stable place live. In 2007 we moved to San Antonio, TX. Here my life hasn’t been perfect but its way better than what I came from.

She was a teacher, a friend and a go to. Whenever I needed help she was always there to help me. I don’t think that I would even be considering college if it wasn’t for her. She was the #1 person that helped me apply for college, and helped out with all that came with that. I was so lost in the middle of school year because I was failing and caught up in the wrong things. She stepped in with a kind heart and made me do what I had to do to get out of high school. This fall I will be attending Texas Southern University where I will study architecture and engineering. I will also be in the navy reserves. I want to use my navy platform to open my own business in about 10 years. I’m not sure yet if I want a hair salon business or if I want to go into interior design. Whichever career path that I choose I know that I will be successful. This long journey of high school has been very stressful, I’ve worked so hard to get where I am. Although it is not over yet I will continue to push through to success. Most of all I want to thank my mother and my two sisters for never letting me slack off and staying on me about attending school every

In my case, my middle school graduation was a quick transition for another reason. The first few months of my freshman year had my parents rushing my grandfather in and out of the hospital because of his failing heart. By this point my grandfather had battled off colon cancer, 3 heart attacks, and 2 open heart surgeries. At age 74 he was not a candidate for a heart transplant but he was able to get a defibrillator.…
