Personal Narrative-Elegant Silks

Improved Essays
It takes us 20 minutes to drive from Cambridge to Boston. As I'm in the car, I stare out at the scenery of the cityscape. The tall buildings of downtown overshadows the sun, they consist of expensive shops and office buildings. The streets are filled with people rushing to get to stores for their over-the-top sales. Women are strolling along the streets with a child or two with them, while holding shopping bags, from the finest stores in the city.

Elegant Silks is one of the top stores in the city, also one of the most expensive. The store takes up four floors, all covered with sheer glass windows. The letters are in gold cursive and take up the entire width of the entrance over the glass doors.

Any style, or colour you really like?" Anya asks.

"Well, for Angela," Vanessa starts, while gesturing to Angela, but is cut off.

"I was thinking we could go for an older look, something flattering but not over the top. And I want a fitted short dress, one that compliments my body. No lace, whatsoever, but I like a bit of sparkle. I want strapless of course and as for the colour, I want it to be dark ruby," Angela says, conceitedly. Demanding much? I mean, it's nice to know exactly what you want, but you don't have to say it in a snarky way.

I take a quick look towards Vanessa, just to see her reaction to her brat of a daughter's rude request. But being the control freak she is, she opens her mouth and instead disagrees, "well, I was thinking we go for more of a sweeter look." Of course she would say that, she doesn't want people to criticize what we're wearing at the Gala. Image is everything to her, obviously.

"Mom! I'm 17, I don't need you picking out my clothes," she says quietly but, in a bitter way, so the whole store won't hear.

"Angela Margret Campbell, I am your mother, and you will do as I say," Vanessa says with an authoritative

I'm not a witch like you, abusing the help of others.

Why does Vanessa treat people of lower classes, I mean income wise, so poorly? Actually correction, why does Vanessa treat anyone not like her so poorly? I mean, it's probably because of how much money we have that gets to her head, making her think that she's better than all. But my question is why? Why does money suddenly influence the way you see yourself and others. Why? There are some questions in the world that are impossible to answer, and this is one of them.

Without Anya looking, Vanessa gives me a death glare, a sign that I'm in for it later. Juliana, why can't you do anything right? Juliana, there's a store attendant for a reason. Juliana, you really don't know anything, now do you? Juliana this and Juliana that.

"Here we are, now the two you," Anya says pointing to Angela and I after placing Angela's dress choice inside one of the dressing rooms. "May use these two dressing rooms and, Mrs Campbell, you may wait here," she explain while pointing to the expensive leather white couch in front of the dressing rooms.

In 2011 the movie The Help was made and based off the best selling book of the same name. The book portrays how white women treat their black maids in 1960’s Mississippi. The main character Skeeter, who grew up in a well to do white family in Mississippi, comes home from college and watches her now married and grown up friends treat their black help with no dignity. Throughout the movie Skeeter’s friends are very concerned with what others think and how it will affect their social status, even if that means showing extreme prejudice and selfishness to the black maids. The Help demonstrates how the idea of defined social classes is outdated and people should answer the call to help others who are not financially well off.…

An envelope carefully placed on top contained a handwritten note. The note told me to wear the clothes he had selected for me, the shoes he had instructed me to bring and to be ready by 7.30pm.
