Personal Narrative: Educating People With Mental Disorders

Improved Essays
For some reason, adults love to ask kids this question: “what do you want to do when you grow up?” For years I was scared and confused. I couldn’t bear the thought of repeating the same actions day after day until the casket. This anxiety alone made me lose track of time, but I was confident in one thing. I loved to read, and escape into the mind of a character for a couple of hours to solve their problems with my own reasoning, question their thought processes, and evaluate what I would do to help them. One day I glanced over at my bookshelf and recognized an underlying theme: all of these protagonists had mental disorders. Immediately I got on the internet to watch documentaries and perspectives of people with mental disorders for hours without end, discovering that I began to cry. I had found my passion, and knew it all along, but couldn’t accept the idea because my interest in the treatment of psychological problems never fit into the mold of the cookie cutter jobs that most people around me have.

Since I was first accepted into the graduate clinical mental health counseling program, I highly anticipated my first experience of actual counseling. I never expected the difficulties I would face upon my first encounter counseling a client. With my client unaware of the reason for being referred to me, asking “what brings you in here today?” turned out to be the wrong question to ask. The more appropriate way initiating a counseling relationship begins with introductions and obtaining background information from the client increasing the trust level between client and the counselor. During the session, I detected my “machine gun questions” meaning I never provided my client adequate time to respond before I asked another question; as a result,…

To all the doctors, teachers, peers, and family members who didn’t believe I would amount to greatness, thank you. When I was young, I didn’t understand why school seemed more challenging for me than it did for everyone else. I couldn’t discern why I was unable to distinguish my right from my left no matter how many times my teacher sighed and told me it was simple or why I could complete math problems perfectly then copy my answer wrong between the work area and the answer line.…

The question of our childhood seemed to be one that we can all recall: “What do you want to be when you grow up?” Typically, we would say things like, “I want to be an astronaut,” or, “I want to be a princess.” As kids, we think big; however, as we get older, we figure that these aspirations to be a ballerina, to be the president, become more farfetched. Instead, we set more day-to-day based goals. Our goals change all the time.…

More recently, I began working for Restore therapy, LLC. as a (SLPA). When I began my position, I was initially ecstatic because this would be my first SLPA position, outside of my clinical experience, after stepping away from the CDIS graduate program. As exciting as this was, a few weeks into the position I felt overwhelmed with lesson plans, providing individual and group therapy, as well as writing individualized education plans (IEPs) for each student on my caseload. (But through perseverance and confidence), by adhering to the specific slots in my schedule reserved for consultation and the development of IEPs, I have become well-organized and efficient in my work.…

John it is your turn," said Mr. Glass. I picked my head up looking around the room searching for the answer; still sitting there puzzled. It is my first day here and I am basically showing my therapist the exact reason I am attending this session. I opened my mouth to speak finally, nothing came out, Mr. Glass raised his hand towards me. He understood my condition; a sigh of relief was lifted off my shoulders; i placed my head back on the table.…

Counselors have the responsibility of working with clients one on one, and also collaborating with other professionals that could benefit the best interest of their clients. Counselors need to acknowledge and respect the professionals that have their own specializations and understand that often times in human services, we never solely work on our own. In this situation, a Child Life Specialist would be an example of a professional with whom I could collaborate with in the future. Child Life Specialists (CLS) would be an excellent group of professionals to collaborate with as Mental Health Counselors. CLS have the difficult role to work with children in hospitals and support them through the process of fighting diseases and illness while trying to cope with many other factors that affect them within this process.…

My interests in counseling is fuel by hurts and pain of people I observed throughout my lifespan. From the time I could speak, I saw family members, being taunted, by traumatic event that occurred throughout their lifespan. As I watched the hurt and pain of others consume them, I watch them suppressed the pain, in a harmful matter. For the future suppressing the pain, like substance abuse became an unconscious systematic coping method for stressors. Furthermore, as years progressed the hurt and pain presented itself through violence, verbal, and physical abuse.…

It was hard to make a choice on what career because I really had none in mind.…

Psychological disorders and mental health issues in today’s society affect many people in a variety of ways. Many people in society are often stigmatized and labeled because of a psychological disorder shunning them from society, the work place, schools, friends, and more. However, recently through my research I see how many people are working their jobs, handling their careers, never stop working and aspiring with their goals, and face varied challenges at home, work, and out socially using a variety of therapies from medications, to psychologist visits, and even psychotherapy. There are over four hundred types of psychological disorders.…

The sickness that I live with is one that some would find excessively appalling, making it impossible to talk about; so I kept it to a whisper. This sickness I thought was to embarrassing to talk about, making it impossible to seek help, left me feeling alone in the dark. This sickness ruined friendships, without me realizing it. This sickness that made getting out of bed a struggle for me. This sickness made it impossible for me to see a positive future, until the day I stopped calling myself “crazy” and began to grow from what we all call, depression.…

Life is a journey of trying to find out who you are, who you want to be, and what you want to do. When you’re young you have far-fetched dreams of becoming a ballerina or an astronaut, but eventually we mature and settle for something much more realistic. From the age of four I wanted to be a veterinarian, I was involved in 4-H from the age of eleven and obtained an internship at a clinic, from there I believed that I was set to go. However, all of those dreams and achievements soon became irrelevant with a single doctor’s appointment. My parents became concerned with my behavior towards others when I was around twelve years old; by fifteen I was acting out beyond control.…
