Personal Narrative: Early Childhood Education

Improved Essays
In working with children from early on, I found that I relate very well with them and understand them. I am patient, yet firm. I found I do not get frustrated when a child is struggling: academically, socially, or emotionally, nor do I give in and let them do as they want. I help them follow through. I started babysitting when I was twelve and continued on throughout the years. I realized that I wanted to work with children and yet knew – then – it was not going to be by teaching them.
When I graduated with my Associates in Liberal Arts, I had no idea what I was going to do with my life, but soon after was offered a nanny position for a family who was expecting their ninth child. Their father worked long distant and the mother had to travel back and forth from school, shopping, and

As I am a flexible person,
I accepted the job and started thinking of all the different ways I could teach these young children. In doing this, I grew excited about teaching them and could not wait to start. Once I started, I fell in love with teaching and realized this is what I am supposed to be doing.
I decided that I would go back to college and obtain my BA in Early Childhood education with the intention of working in rural Alaska once I was finished. I continued teaching for a few years and finally applied to UAS where I finished two years and then switched to UAA where I can learn in a classroom setting and learn from more people. While going to school, I continued to help at the home school.
Throughout the years, I have tutored children who struggle particularly in reading and math. I also have tutored a couple of English Language Learners, teaching them reading and math and any other subject they were struggling with at the time.
Working with children and seeing how others work with them is the best way for me to become a better teacher. When watching others interact with children and how the children

After graduating, my dream of an office job was realized, but it didn’t make me happy. I didn’t feel like I was doing anything of substance, that, in the end, my work didn’t really have an impact. It took almost three years of this before I accepted that the path that would make me happy was the one thing that I was sure I didn’t want: a career in teaching. Since starting on this path I feel that I have found what I am meant to do. I feel connected to my work in a way that I never have…

I have wanted to become an Occupational Therapy Assistant since I was in 7th grade. The school I went to housed all of the special needs children for the county. I grew up with these children in my classes and always wanted them to know that just because they have the label special needs does not mean that they are different from anybody else. I watched an OTA come to school everyday and work with these children to help them write better and kick a ball so they could go to P.E. with us. I thought to myself what an amazing job opportunity this would be to let people know that they can do anything they set their mind to.…

I was ten years ago and I can still vividly remember sitting on an old, wooden rocking chair while the words of The Very Hungry Caterpillar trembled off my lips to a room full of second graders. I can recall the eagerness and excitement that filled their little faces as I flipped from page to page. There was an abundance of curiosity and desire to learn in that classroom that made me happy that I decided on skipping recess to read to the younger students. There was a fire that lit in my ten-year-old body that day. That was the day where I finally had an answer to all the “What do you want to be when you grow up?”…

I grew up in an upper-middle class, white, Catholic family, in the middle of suburban Cary, North Carolina. Culture was a term introduced in school with pictures of exotic places and bright wardrobes; history lived inside textbooks with stories of war and migration. My fourth grade family history project contained one piece of information: my great-grandmother sailed to the States from Italy in 1904. The little history and culture introduced by my family showed me who I do not want to become. While the teachings of Christianity shaped me into a compassionate, open-hearted person, I struggle to accept the dogma that followed it.…

Fifteen years’ worth of experience at two schools and in two separate periods of my life. I started coaching wrestling right out of high school and after seven years quit for various reasons. Four years later I returned and have been going strong since. One could argue that my influence comes from a talk I had with my son Adrian when he was eight years old but I found that it was only an eye opener for something bigger.…

When I was 20 years old, I got a job at an after-school program for children ages 5 to 11 years old. It was an educational based after-school program, facilitating enrichment activities and tutoring for the children. This was my first “real job”, and I was over the moon excited about it. What really got me excited about the job, besides the fact that it paid relatively well, I was working in a team setting; I was working with other adults, and we were all working towards the same goal, to provide a safe, educationally fun environment for children to go after school. Also, at the time, I had thoughts about possibly going in to the teaching profession (I didn’t really know what I wanted to do professionally at this time, but I thought I would…

In one of my past position as a financial Aid counselor, I enjoyed working with each student helping them with their financial planning for their 4 years of college, but the most important thing I enjoy was being able to encourage each student and having them know I was there if they had any problems or concerns. I met such a diverse group of students that I had to learn that each student is unique and their concerns are different.
