Personal Narrative: Dyadic Encounter

Great Essays
Dyadic Encounter My partner for this encounter was Monica Gomez, a 34 year old who has been working for the Livingston School District for 18 years, and has been a resource aide for 8 years now in Livingston, Ca. I have known Monica for about 19 years now through my sister. In high school her and my sister became great friends, and have kept that friendship throughout all these years. Not only did she become my sisters friend, but she also became my friend, and we see each other like family. Our encounter took place on Thursday, August 29, at Starbucks in Livingston at 6:30p.m.
Monica is a light skin girl, with long straight, medium, brown hair. The day we had our encounter she was wearing a black shirt, and black pants with cheetah print

Right” yet. I do desire to have children, but at times I feel I will never become a mother since I’m already 35 years old. Sometimes just thinking about it I feel depressed.”
As I asked her this question I observed that she looked at me for a second, and I could tell she was not as comfortable answering this question than the general ones. It took her longer to answer. She really thought about it, gathering her thoughts before she would answer. I continued to ask random personal questions. I put quotation marks around prince charming and Mr. Right since she gave emphasis using her voice tone.
Question- (Me) “ How do you feel on this new educational journey?”
Reply- (Monica) “ I feel excited and nervous. It’s something I have been wanting to do for a long time, and now that I finally started going back to school, I’m a little nervous because I worry about how long it will take me to finish my education.”
Conversation continued…
Question- (Me) “Why did you say ‘you are worried how long it will take’?”
Reply- (Monica) “ Because...um… I’m already 34 years old. I feel like I started this journey at an older age, and I fear I will face obstacles that will hold me back from getting my

Our encounter ended at this point, and I gave her a comforting reply, I said, “Monica, I know your grandparents are watching over you as your guardian angels, and all the fears you have I’m sure they will help you overcome them, and you are making them very proud, because you are trying to superior yourself in life.” Monica said “thank you,” and she gave me a hug. This was a great experience to do this encounter with Monica, regardless if I know her, and work with her part time. Even then, there are many things I didn't know about her and I have always wondered about, but this encounter gave me the opportunity to take our conversation to a deeper level. The conversation went smooth, and we both were good listeners. I never interrupted her while she was speaking. We both put our phones on silent so it wouldn't be a distraction. I showed my interest in Monica’s responses by moving my head like a “yes” gesture so she could know I was interested in what she was communicating to me. Also, only a few times I would reframe what she said, so she could know I was also understanding what she was telling me. Overall, this was a great encounter as well as a great experience. When we finished our Starbucks drink we gave each other a hug, we smiled, and I said “have a nice weekend, rest up and relax,” and Monica said, “thank you, I’ll see you on Tuesday no work

As a child growing up in Rhode Island, the smallest state in the Union, the idea of a vast planet brimming with civilization and culture was more like something out of a fairy tale than it was reality. So, when my father announced that we would be leaving the country to go to Scotland, the home of his and my ancestors, my world began to expand at a rapid pace. This trip could not have been timed more perfectly. The summer of 2007 marked the end of fourth grade, my first year at Saint Mary Academy Bay View.…

Feeling like an outsider is something I do on a daily. Ever since I could remember I had always felt like I didn’t belong. Whether that was because I was taller than most kids my age, or I was always at least two years younger than all of my classmates. I had always felt different, almost as if I was supposed to be born in another time. The need to belong is one of the fundamental needs within all humanity as we all feel the need to "fit in".…

Reflective Journal Assignment – Assignment #2 This whole interviewing experience was pretty great and interesting from both sides of the interviewing process; But while I was being interviewed, I felt a slight bit of discomfort during the process and felt that while my “Social Worker” (Bailey) was interviewing me was just a tad bit tense; And what I mean by her being tense is her posture was tense, like she didn’t really seem comfortable at all interviewing me, and her voice was tense as well, she spoke fast and rushed through everything which caused some discomfort. On the other hand, she did make me feel like I was being heard, she never once broke her eye contact with me and somewhat expanded on the questions she originally asked; Also she made it quite easy for me…

I have always been taught to judge people based on their actions rather than their appearance, and this was a lesson that was completely reinforced by the house I lived in, in which I grew up. As kids, if any of us even remotely suggested that we were focused on someone 's looks, we were immediately punished and reminded that there is no way to know a person based on what he or she looked like, but rather it is important to know the heart inside the body. Making snap judgments based on appearance was definitely not acceptable in our household. This was difficult for kids, since young people often judge people based on first impressions, which generally involve their physical appearance. Nevertheless, as an adult, it became as clear as day to…
