Personal Narrative: Drawing Of The Lottery

Improved Essays
I was anxiously awaiting the drawing of the lottery, only two hours left. Pacing my house and hoping that I would finally win. Little beads of sweat fell dont my forehead as the clock ticked on. I sat on the couch thinking how ridiculous it was to think that I would ever win considering there is 1 in 292,201,338 chance. A notebook sat to my left with everything I had planned for the money written down, if only I could win. 9:59 the clock read. The nerves were starting to get the best of me as i turned on the television. They started to announce numbers and one by one my numbers started to mirror theirs. I had won. I sat on my couch for 2 hours staring at my ticket and the paused tv screen that showed the winning numbers. I did not call or tell …show more content…
I log on to facebook to see if anyone else had won, two others had, and to recalculate how much money I would acquire. Finally I call my dad to tell him the good news and together we head to the lottery headquarters. We discussed the whether or not to cash out or get annuitized payments. Walking into that office building was nerve wrecking because what if i read a number wrong? What if i didn't really win and I had dragged my father all the way here? I would be crushed. A few conversations later and I walked out with a check for $327,835,000. Taking the cash out value seemed smarter since you never know what could happen to the …show more content…
My mom has been having a lot of health issues, being jobless, and not having a steady place to live. I found a house that isn't too small, but isn't too big either. I drove the car I had just bought her to where she currently was staying and knocked on the door. I had not seen her in awhile so she was confused as to why i was there, she didn't know I had won the lottery. I handed her a set of keys which made her even more confused. When I told her that she now owned the car I drove in and owned her own house, she collapsed. Having such a rough patch for the last 10 years has worn my mother out. She never thought she would own anything other than clothes ever again. To see the appreciation in her eyes and knowing your mom will not ever have to sleep in her car again is not a feeling you can

So before I left to go on this trip, I entered the lottery for this miniature junior high called dutcher that is difficult to get into. We had entered before we had officially decided to go on the cross country trip, so I wasn't going to be able to go to dutcher. The odd thing was; I didn't show up to the drawing because I just figured that I wouldn't make it in, but the next day when I went to elementary school a friend of mine told me that I had made it in. This had surprised me, because normally I don't make it into these things. My elementary was a lottery school, and I only got into it because my brother got pulled.…

For my short essay, I have chosen to write about The Lottery. The lottery to me provides epic amount of material to write about in this essay. In this essay, I would like to contribute my take on what I believe what Shirley Jackson meant by her characterization of character presented in this short story as well as try my hand at trying to decipher the message she was attempting to get across from her conflict and ending. First, Shirley Jackson describe boys playing with stones on a nice summer day while the girls look on, fathers discuss “men” things, and mothers discussing “women” things while reuniting with their husbands.…
