Every American knows of the civil rights leader Marther Luther King Jr., but not many people know about the man who inspired MLK to employ the passive resistance technique as a way of protest. That man is Mahatma Gandhi, he is also known for having this idea that "The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others." Some people believe that there is no correlation between finding yourself and committing yourself to helping others, but that way of thinking is simply ignorant. The truth is that by losing oneself in the service of others, that person is able to obtain new experiences that will help determine who they want to be in life. That semester i gathered my friends and we started a club at my school. The club collected gently used shoes from the people in my community, and every summer we would send the shoes we collected to the church in Trinidad to be distributed to those in need. During this time I was facing a lot of pressure trying to figure out what i wanted to do with my life, and through this experience of helping others, I determined that I wanted to start and run my own non profit organization to help people all throughout the Caribbean. Without going to the church that first time to help out, I would have never discovered my love to help others, and probably would not know what I want to do with my life. I owe my future of making the world a better place to the people i first helped in Trinidad. People who think that being of service to others does not affect their lives are selfish. Imagine a world without great individuals like Dr. King, Mahatma Gandhi, or Susan B. Anthony. All of those people became what we know them as today, because they found their purpose in life by losing themselves in the service of other people.
