I never was the most confident person when it came to competing. I always felt discouraged because I “knew” there would be people better than me. Towards the end of my junior year in high school a special program was announced to the students. “Doc Prep” was a weeklong trip to Baylor College of Medicine that gave ten students the opportunity to witness heart surgeries, practice suturing, handle human brains, and meet many interesting people. Who wouldn’t want to be part of this enriching experience?…
I have seen more doctors than I can count on my fingers due to my asthma acting up every now and then and at times with bad allergic reactions. However there was one doctor that has always been there for my parents and I. He of course may not be world famous yet, but to me he is the best I have ever met. I’ve known him since I was in elementary school and I still continue to see him from time to time but since he is a doctor it isn’t as often.…
I wish I could Kevin Miramontes, my old math teacher. Mr. Miramontes was my favorite teacher ever. He had my two older siblings before having me. I was obviously I was his favorite student ever, like come on have you met me. Why wouldn't I be anybody's favorite.…
I shadowed Dr. McAlhaney, who owns her own family practice, during the Fridays I had available during my summer classes. This practice is located in my small, rural hometown that currently lacks a hospital, and as a result, has a very limited number of physicians. The nearest hospital is over 30 minutes away. Over my time shadowing here, I saw over 60 patients with a variety of health conditions. I would arrive early in the morning and leave near 6 p.m. at night.…
“I am well aware that this surgery is very experimental but you can be assured that my residents wouldn’t recommend it if it wasn’t the safest option” The Chief explained softly. The ever present pitter patter of Seattle rain was descending on Seattle General Hospital as he uttered the last words. “So let me get this straight, you’re going to let a robot-” Mila began before being cut off. At the young age of 16, brain surgery shouldn’t be one of her problems. “Not any robot, a robot that was made specifically to perform a perfect frontal lobe resection.…
When I view the world around me, I see darkness. I see broken people with hurting hearts hurting others. What I also see are Christians. Christians everywhere who are doing nothing to love and help the pained individuals surrounding them, while doing everything to promote prosperity in their own lives. Of course, not every Christian is like that, as I am not one of those Christians.…
For him the surgery will change so much. Appendix 2 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DWC7H95mmtg&feature=related - My Gastric Bypass Journey vid. 1 General Notes Transcripts Themes Her intro seems more informal and less rehearsed than Isaac Delarte’s.…
I remember Mr. Errico. Both of us were newbies to SAS. While he started the year off, by making cool and fun raps about every word from the 8 words of speech. We were memorizing his wordy raps. Later on, we were writing essays from reading, “A Long Walk to Water (ALWT),” articles and even about how an everyday object and yourself are kind of related.…
Modern Surgical procedures are not ideal in terms of efficiency, invasiveness, and reliability. Surgeries involve a large staff working in concert, sometimes over the better part of a day and with minimal rest. Surgeons can become fatigued during long surgeries, possibly experiencing hand tremors and reduced mental faculty as a result. Moreover, a great deal of pain, bleeding, and trauma results from conventional methods of surgery. For instance, traditional heart bypass surgery requires that the patient's chest be "cracked" open in a huge incision.…
My doctor told me that this surgery would finally explain why, at the age of eighteen, I still had not had my period. I needed to know why. Still, I felt as if I carried myself to my own casket as I climbed up onto the operating table and laid my head on its cold, hard surface. The anesthesiologist put the plastic mask over my mouth. I breathed in deeply.…
I have known from a young age that I wanted to do something exceptional in my life. Something about helping others drew me in, so I knew a career in the medical field would be my best fit. It was not until a traumatic day in my life occurred that made me realize I was bound to be a nurse. I have played volleyball for five year, my senior year was not an exception. Volleyball was the only sport I played and my passion.…
“The First Appendectomy” is a medican journey about reality. Therefor, it consisted of lots of annoyance and steep, bumpy, downhill roads. Reality is the unmodified version of life. There are no fairytales or happily ever afters. In this case, Mr. Poldnsky needed to have a surgery by a fully educated and prepared doctor “...and spent half an hour tying knots on the bestposts in my room.”…
In the end of January I was honored to observe the work of excellent surgeon Anna Gibson, who practicing in the Surgeons Clinic in Liberty Hospital. She allowed me to observe open gallbladder removal. The surgery was scheduled for early in the morning and at 5 am I was in the hospital. I hoped that my early arrival will allow me to observe the work of Surgical Technologist from the very first moment, when she sets up the back table.…
Responsiveness The entire case had concerns related to responsiveness. The staff were never willing to listen to the patient, most members of the staff did not spend enough time with the patient to listen and answer her queries. Moreover, the employees of the hospital were not willing to help the patient while moving from one room to another for primary scans. Even on the day of operation, when the patient’s mother asked for help, the response of the nurse was not satisfactory.…
Each person has different tastes in animals, such as dogs and cats. People also have different preferences for art. James Herriot mixes these ideas together into one in his story, All Creatures Great and Small. Whether it was suturing a wound or the birth of a cow, it was beautiful. Precisely like art, all of the different colors are easy on the eyes and the different textures make for an entertaining experience.…
