Personal Narrative: Dorothea Lange

Improved Essays
Dorothea Lange, a famous documentary photographer and photojournalist, once said that “photography takes a moment out of time, altering life by holding it still”. As a photographer myself, I love this quote because it could never be more true. Photography is a way to capture stories and memories within a powerful image. I’m very passionate about photography because it allows me to be active, tell stories, and my skills will always be improving.
Being an active and very hands on person, I love having a hobby that I can do while hiking, going on roadtrips, and having fun photoshoots with friends. Throughout June of 2016, after getting off school, I started to research lots of hikes in Washington, the best times to go, and what photography equipment

When I’m leaving the house, whether it’s to go to the park or on a small roadtrip, I will gain more experience as a photographer. Sometimes the best photographs are captured when I wasn’t even preparing for a shoot. When summer was starting to wind down in 2016, my mom, my brother, and I decided to take a trip down to OR to visit friends and try a new sport called Sandboarding. While I wasn’t planning to be taking photos while sandboarding, I had my camera with me and would capture images of my friends and family attempting this sport. My images came out amazing because there was life and joy within them. I’ve learned that it’s not all perfect lighting and scenes that make great images, but capturing life inside them. Though when you’re working with certain scenes and lighting there are ways to add emotion to the images. Through angles, you can use the rule of thirds which instructs you to have your subjects not in the middle of the photograph but off to the sides. This will allow your photograph to flow smoother. Another way is by lighting. I’ve found, along with all other photographers, that the Golden Hour is the best time to shoot (sunrise and sunset) because these are the times your images will contain a warm, cozy glow. I’m still learning techniques for adding life and emotion to my images. With these ideas in mind, I’ll be able to capture more …show more content…
When learning how to edit your photos through classes and videos, there’s always something new to learn. Taking a photography class was a great experience for me. Through my homeschooling co-op I had a class with about ten other students. Each week we would shoot outside if the weather was nice, and then take our photographs into the classroom and learn creative editing techniques. Although classrooms are a great way to learn, YouTube is always your friend and is super beneficial when it comes to editing in complicated programs like Adobe Photoshop. When I first started to edit I would search up basic editing skills like how to fix lighting problems, add contrast, and crop images. Now, as I’ve been using Photoshop for a few years, I’ll watch YouTube videos on more complicated, detailed techniques that require more focus. The cool thing about photography is that there is an infinite amount you can learn from millions of sources; Classes, YouTube videos, books, and may more.
Looking back on Lange’s quote “photography takes a moment out of time, altering life by holding it still”, we see that the main goal of being a photographer is having the ability to capture all the moments we experience. While capturing these stories, photography allows me to stay active on hikes and roundtrips, create stories within all my photos, and

Nearing an end to my landscape project, I was looking back through my photos that I had already taken and found four strong ones but could not find a fifth (five was the required number of photos) to my liking. The photo itself was taken at Disney Springs outlet mall, on our last day in Orlando. taken as complete accident, my family and I were walking back to the car from dinner and we came across this beautiful view of the surrounding lake with the setting sun in the background.…

People have access to capturing special moments according to their preferences. However, not all the pictures can be listed under the artistic photography. Instead of taking images, photographers do make images, showing people light and shadow, color and outline, as well as personal contemplation and imagination. In addition, the process of turning negatives into photographic papers requires some technical supports to polish those images, such as the dye transfer and darkroom techniques. Telling its own story, photography describes the subject itself, then conveys the personal visual experience, and above all it can create the imagination and arouse resonance with audiences, finally moving it into fine…

With 80M+ photos being shared on social platforms and 3.5B+ photos being liked each and everyday on Instagram, it is a clear example that as a society we have redefined the term photography and the ways in which we use it to share everyday life as well as to explore the world around us. Photographers don’t have all the time in the world; in fact sometimes they only have a second or 100 hundredths of a second to capture a moment. They capture these photographic images in order to invoke emotion and leave an indelible impression to the viewers. Documentary photography especially captures public attention and allows us to deepen our thoughts and understanding as a society to spread awareness in the world we live in. Documentary photography focuses on one story or theme, for example photographing the “impact on health of people, particularly children, caused by the nuclear accidents…in recent decades in Eastern Europe”…

Stepping out of the RV for the first time that summer I remember, hearing all of the boats and Jet Ski’s out on the water. Everyone was enjoying themselves and all I could think was why weren’t ours in the water yet. After setting up camp, unloading the RV, and starting dinner, it was finally time to hit the water. Standing on the shoreline, you could see for miles with a perfect view of the sunset as it set just behind the cliffs. With beautiful, vibrant reds, oranges, and yellows all swirled together to make a perfect sunset, my best friend and I jumped onto our jet skis and headed to our favorite spot, “the cliffs”.…

Comparison/Contrast Essay My life is like a camera because I focus on what's important, I capture the good times and I develop from the negatives. When capturing an image, a camera focuses on the most important thing in its field of view, the object (Toussaint, J.-P, & Smith, 2008). In the same way, I also have many things that need my attention but I deliberately choose to focus on my children, which are the most important things I have.…

The paradoxical role of photography in contemporary life is explored by Teju Cole in his essay “Memories of Things Unseen.” When a photograph is the last trace we have of a destroyed work of art, it becomes something more, or so it seems. Photography in its purest form is simply a method of storytelling without the need for words. Many factors go into taking a photo. You don't simply take a photo using just your eyes, but rather with your emotions, experience, and heart.…

In John Berger’s book Understanding a Photograph, he argues that there is a distinct discontinuity between an individual viewing a photo, and the actual photo. A picture solely preserves a single moment in time, and while they often act to tell a story, the medium cannot be fully interpreted without knowing the story that surrounds it. Although there is a definite connection between a photograph and the narrative that corresponds with it, the photo is only a visual aid for the story; it does not tell us everything like the written piece does. I agree with Berger’s argument that photographs can shape the written story that is told about a single character through invoking various responses, emotions, feelings, and interpretations between the…
