Personal Narrative: Don T Shoot The Shot

Improved Essays
Take the shot. Shoot the ball. I have been playing varsity basketball for exactly 105 days and these phrases are near the only ones I hear from my coach. It’s not that I have an atrocious shot, I just can’t shoot the ball. Just as I can never seem to shoot the ball, trying to write this essay has proved despairingly difficult. Growing up, I came as close to living the “Black American Dad” story while actually having a dad. My mom was a high school drop-out who turned her life around. Meanwhile, my dad was a high school drop-out turned…dad. I don’t know how well my parents thought relationships begun at gas stations pan out, but obviously well enough to have me. Part Black. Part Korean. Elementary school “friends” would bully me for having different hair, different skin tone, different eyes than them. At home, things were not much better. While most of our life centered in Riverside, we seemed to live everywhere but. With living in questionable areas and constant exposure to gang violence and drugs, it appeared to me that my family was aimless, and yet headed in the wrong direction. …show more content…

One day out of the many they fought, I set out with a mindset of confronting them. To proclaim my want for a family that left marks of affection rather than affliction. Interrupting these wistful thoughts, I saw something fall to the ground that caused me to see red. A gun. My parents noticed soon after I did, both turning towards me; I couldn’t take the shot then

The Arrival I had originally planned to travel to Rio on September 5th through September 12th. A perspicacious and experienced hunter named Rainsford accompanied me. It was nighttime when I first spotted land of any sort. It was vaguely visible and was opaque, so misty that even Rainsford couldn’t see it. Utterly tired, I began drifting off, dreaming of the adventures we were soon to face.…

However, many people around me had; whether it was basketball, cheerleading, or track - they had found a purpose that drove them. The norm may not always be the right way to go. I no longer want to be a part of a popular or important group of people, if I feel that what the group is doing or believes in is wrong, even if it means I'm not a part of the norm. I am not afraid to stand out on my own. I have challenged this belief for many years. When I was in elementary school, I was bullied by a group of girls that I hung with, looked up to and idolized.…

Even among other Korean Americans, I did not fit because usually they were more American or more Korean. For instance, they didn’t speak any Korean and were totally raised as an American. When I tried to speak Korean to them, although they were Korean themselves they would tell me speak English because this is America. It really surprised me because even though they don’t speak Korean or very little, they dismissed their Korean heritage. Moreover, there were other Korean Americans not in those categories as well but they had their own culture made.…

“What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger” is a commonly used quote. I can honestly say I didn’t hear it from an upbeat pop song at first. But from someone more important in life, my father. When I was younger I thought the tiny scars and disgusting bruises was something hard to overcome. What I “overcame” was nothing compared to what would happen in January of 2008.…
