Personal Narrative: Doc Prep

Improved Essays
I never was the most confident person when it came to competing. I always felt discouraged because I “knew” there would be people better than me. Towards the end of my junior year in high school a special program was announced to the students. “Doc Prep” was a weeklong trip to Baylor College of Medicine that gave ten students the opportunity to witness heart surgeries, practice suturing, handle human brains, and meet many interesting people. Who wouldn’t want to be part of this enriching experience? However, as usual, I thought of all the other “better” applicants and felt I had no chance. I contemplated this for a while and then realized something. There will always be someone who exceeds me in some way, just as there will be someone else

My clinical experience so far has been quite interesting, because I learned basic clinical procedures and preventions that I know will benefit me as a nurse in the near future. During lab, we discussed infection control, personal hygiene, and isolation precautions. These procedures impact my personal health and wellness, because I need to ensure that I am using the proper techniques in order to keep me safe. Also, I know that it is important to make sure my patients are not at risk of developing hospital associated infections.…

They call them “Tap-taps,” the brightly painted open back trucks that transport passengers through the dusty streets of Haiti. A traveler taps the side of the vehicle to board, pays, rides and then taps to jump off at a desired destination. For one particular man who sat with his face covered by a towel, that destination was the Diegue clinic in Port-au-Prince. All I knew from intake was that this patient was here for a foot issue. I noticed the adult sitting uncomfortably, a towel wrapping his foot, as his eyes scanned around the room.…

My second week back at the hospital was quite challenging, as I found difficulty in understanding the doctor’s writing in the patient chart. My patient was a 38-year-old, who was diagnosis with diabetes and hypertension about twenty years ago. When I was reading the patient chart and could not of understand the doctors writing, I felt sad and said to myself “if I can’t understand the writing now how would I understand it in the future”. I was able to recognize a few words, but that didn’t help me in understanding the physician diagnosis and order for my patient.…

At first yesterday was a little confusing for my group and I. We had thought that we would be prepairing Shephard's pie, but we ended up making the pork and beer stew. Once we had everything cleared up, production went smoothly, and we ran into little or no complications. When service came round things got a little hectic like usual, but we all managed to get everything out on time. Cleaning went well as usual, and we got out around the time we were supposed to.…

For the first week, my clinical objective was to participate in interprofessional team communication and collaboration. Being a student it can often be daunting to go out on a limb to put yourself out there and incorporate yourself as part of the team. This week the experience I encountered which helped me reach my clinical objective was quite adrenaline-charged. Upon having a patient return from their dialysis treatment they were found unresponsive by my preceptor and I. Being able to communicate with my preceptor on the next steps of activating the rapid response team (RRT) as well as getting more hands on deck was a big step and definitely a different role than that of just a student nurse.…

I came in to Practicum not wanting to share much. I felt the pull to go inward and to be silent. I just didn’t want to say anything, again. For the most part, I was observing and trying to pay attention to everything. While we were all waiting for our practicum room to become available, Ally came over in a panic.…

Lastly, there was one patient who I had noticed since the beginning of my clinical rotation. He was often wondering around the unit or sitting in his room. However, one morning, I noticed him sitting in the dining room by himself and decided to approach him. I introduced myself and asked him if he would like to play cards. He immideitly declined my offer saying something along the lines of “no thanks.”…

Let me tell you guys about Ginger Deli, okay. It was a beautiful Saturday afternoon, but I wouldn't know anything about that because I was scheduled to work from 2PM - 10PM in the health system. I was sad, in despair even, because it seems that on ALL the nice days I'm stuck inside. It was lunch time, a self-imposed time when I'm hungry, and I decided to go down stairs. The health system does these marvelous restaurant visits, so even if you don't get a chance to frequent the town, you can still enjoy it's quaint charm, usually with limited, but decent, options and honestly, it works for me.…

The Traditional Physician’s Narrative The traditional physician’s narrative lacks the compassionate side of the physician, and avoids mention of any interpersonal relationship between patients and doctors. Medicine often dictates that physicians remain in a state of detached concern, which permits treatment and generalized humanitarian concern but rejects sincere compassion. All of Us and Lessons from the Heart of the AIDS Epidemic challenge this traditional narrative through the lens of Dr. Mehret Mandefro and Dr. Kate Scannell, respectively. Dr. Mehret, a doctor in the Bronx, asks why black women have the highest rate of HIV infection and engages in personal relationships with her patients, who parallel her own life.…

The First Clinical Experience It was an early morning in April. My friends and I arrived 45 minutes early to our long term care facility in Scottsdale, Arizona. The three of us sat in my car and anxiously awaited stepping foot into the care facility as we had no idea what to expect. I began to wonder what the patients would be like and how I would care for them.…
