Dixie the Stray
There are so many stray dogs on the streets just looking to be loved. In the summer of 2015 In July my family and I were being followed by a small yellow dog after my sister pet him. When I looked down into his eyes I knew that all he needed was for someone to love him. My sister (Xandria), my brother (Xavier), and My two cousins (Sarah and Citlalli’s) goal was to find him an owner by the end of our trip in Mexico. All of our dreams were crushed when my mom and that we could take him on all of our adventures but we would have to put him back where we found him. I felt so hopeless and so angry because of what my mom had told us.
After my Mom, Xavier, Xandria, Sarah, and Citlalli missed the 8:00 bus we only had two hours to spare.

We took him on all of our adventures. I remember my mom said that Dixie probably felt like he was also on a vacation. I told her that it might be true but dogs did not understand what a vacation was. If I a dog felt loved they should not feel loved temporary, they should feel loved for the rest of their life. This is why I am glad we found Dixie an owner, it just would not feel right to act like we loved Dixie but throw him back on the streets. I learned a lot from this whole experience and I will never forget what my family and I did to help change Dixie’s life. I learned that anyone can make a difference if they work hard enough to accomplish their goals. We can all do amazing things if we never give up and always get straight up when you fall. While we were trying to find an owner we all doubted ourselves that we would ever find an owner for Dixie. I was not the only one who changed from this experience, my sister was also affected from this experience. She was in love with Dixie and got way too attached to him. She loved him from the second they caught eyes. Even though she did not want to let go, she knew what would be best for

It is eleven o’clock on a Saturday morning in the mid 1980’s, my younger brother and I are sleeping peacefully in our beds. We are suddenly awaken by a blast of music coming from the downstairs den. I quickly jump out of bed and run down the hallway bumping into my brother who has the same destination as I. We both race through the living room, the dining room and past my mom in the kitchen then down the three, blue carpeted stairs to the large den. My dad is sitting on the edge of his leather, rocker recliner with his 1974 Fender base guitar playing along with the song, “Dixie Chicken” by Little Feat. The music was turned up so loud no one could talk or hardly think.…

Veterinarian and Client: Appropriate Communication A study was undergone in which 6 pet owners and 4 veterinarians were evaluated via open-ended questions (Coe et al., 2008). The purpose was to compare both vets and clients view of appropriate communication between the two (Coe et al., 2008). The study concluded in similar responses inappropriate communication from both the veterinarians and the clients, also suggesting that “breakdowns” in communication can result in negative effects on their relationship (Coe et al., 2008). Adams and Frankel (2007) suggested that appropriate communication skills are reminders why current and aspiring veterinarians have chosen to go into the field, to begin with.…

The Dog’s situation in Mexico is tragic. Most of them are in constant abandonment by their owners. The people who wants to acquire a pet never think about the responsibility to have a dog or another animal with them because the idea of having an animal is not seen as a total responsibility, or at least not everyone sees it that way.…

Christmas in Dixie It’s been a few years since I composed a Christmas letter because final grading always trumped my desire to celebrate the season and keep touch with friends and family. So, let’s catch up! As most of you know, I love mountains, creeks, moonlight (perhaps moonshine), walks in the woods, and bonfires.…

Murder Vs Mustache Pets can be a symbol of our childhood or our safety zone, but what if they were taken from us? Although this can be horrific, it is just one situation this kind-hearted man had to face. The Old Man in “The Story of the Old Man Who Made Withered Trees to Flower” had the more difficult conflict to face than Mike in “The Moustache.” The kind-hearted Old Man was taken advantage of again and again by his murdering, thieving neighbor, whereas Mike only had to deal with his grandmother trying to kiss him.…

Taking a deep breath, I noticed the large piles of clothes, both dirty and clean. “Dang, that’s a lot of clothes, that’s probably why she’s in here so long everyday.” I thought to myself about my mom. The rest of the night I couldn’t, knowing that in the morning we would be making our venture to the breeder, 3 hours away. “C’mon C'mon, get up, we gotta go!”…

When I went to Mexico for a week, it was an adventure I never thought I would experience. It was the first time I went outside of the United States. I always heard rumors and stories about other places around the world, but it didn’t have the same meaning and effect to me as actually being exposed and involved in it. A great number of things were different, but what really stood out to me was how many stray dogs and cats there were roaming about in neighborhoods. Of course the people who lived in Mexico were used to this and it was part of their culture, but for me, this was something i never witnessed before.…

My friend Taylor’s Chihuahua had previously given birth to puppies multiple times, and every time I asked if I could take one I got the same answer, no. This time I decided to play my cards differently; instead I showed up to my house with the dog without permission. Knowing my parents would make my give the dog back to the rightful owner, my best friend, I had to make up a different story to tell. After walking in the door with this adorable puppy, my parents were shocked to hear he was mine.…

I grew up on a large open property somewhat out in the country in Healdsburg. My family and I called it (and still do) “The Ranch”. Though all in separate houses, most of my family lived there; my grandma and grandpa in one house, my aunt’s family in one, and my mom and I in another. We all were very close; my cousin on my aunt’s side was practically a sister, and my aunt and uncle a second set of parents. It was rare for one of us to not be at the others house.…
