Personal Narrative: Diversity In Bloomington

Improved Essays
Diversity is huge in Bloomington, especifically in my high school. You can find all sorts of people with different backgrounds, but they all have one thing in common; They are willing to accept and adapt to each others beliefs. When I arrived in this community, I step into it thinking that I was not suited to be in this place. Previously, I was living in New York City, and I did not find it comfortable. I was eager to make friends, but the people in my New York neighborhood didn’t seem too interested in me. I felt isolated and lost in a new country, it made me want to return to my home country. Bloomington, however welcomed me. I found kids here who were all different, and were curious of me for being different too. What I was experiencing …show more content…
The moral of this experience is that home where everyone is unique, and each individual shares a certain characteristic that makes a community strong. I have seen my friends be affected by in the community is drugs. I’ve had to cut off good people before because they jumped into drugs and got hooked onto stronger ones. There is not a day that goes by that I hear about someone new doing drugs. I’ve seen many athletes take the wrong path because they got hooked on drugs. Teens don’t just chose drugs because drugs can make you “look cool”, but because they could be the only way to relieve their personal problems. If there is one thing I would love to change is the support given to teens. In college I want to study psychology. Being able to understand what runs through the minds of teens will help me create a program designed to provide the support and guidance in troubled times. My goal is to run a non profit organization that will focus on this. My program will help them find what they love and do it when they do not feel strong. When I feel weak, soccer relieves all my stress and encourages me to keep going. There is a lot of leadership opportunities at Augsburg that I am willing to

The town that I grew up in is known for being a very diverse town – the high school that I graduated from back in Clifton, New Jersey, had around 3,300 students enrolled from many different backgrounds, races, nationalities, class, and religions. Walking through the hallway of Clifton High School one would hear many different languages and see many people who look exceptionally different from one another. Because the high school had many students from different backgrounds and wanted the students to be well aware and accepting of this, the school offered various clubs and organizations such as: sports teams, French, Spanish, and Italian clubs, a cheerleading team, and even a pep band. These clubs and organizations allowed many students of different…

When one thinks of Iowa, one does not necessarily think of cultural diversity. The more and more I think about it as I have matured, it was exceedingly challenging to grow up as an Asian in my community. That is because I sometimes had trouble understanding the culture of others and my own culture at my young age. When I was younger, I found it very challenging to understand many of the things my peers and teachers were saying figuratively. For example, I had difficulty understanding jokes, so I took them literally and did not know they were joking.…

I had wept for the hundredth time today over my dead wife. I’m just gonna forget about that for now, almost everyone in this small town in Indiana has moved for Oregon. I can’t believe the things I have heard about the trip, it still echos in this small wooden cabin. Back to the things I’ve heard about the trip, some wagon had gotten chased by a pack of indians on horses, another thing I’ve heard is that many jams have occurred due to stubborn mules. I plan to leave this empty town and the only reason I plan to leave is so that I can leave my tragic past behind.…

Another tragic memory that pumped some sense into my head about racial identity and ethnic disparities; was when my elder brother was arrested on the basis of being black. My brother was wrongfully arrested because a Caucasian officer expressed that he saw him rob someone. Upon arrival at the scene trying to understand what happened, that officer expressed in his words that “ nigger you know you robbed that store”. I couldn’t believe that this was happening to me because, I have always heard about situations like this. The officer made more remarks such as, “you niggers are always stealing”, “you niggers will always be shit”, and you are going to pay for this crime even if you did not do it.…

I hadn’t been home in almost a year but as I rode through the south-side of Chicago I noticed nothing but run-down buildings throughout the black and brown communities. What was once local shops, churches, community centers, schools, homes, and gardens were now replaced by empty lots filled with patches of dandelions and weeds. Developing and uplifting communities of color has been my main focus for several years. Recently, there has been a perpetuated distortion of Chicago; without any signs of rebuilding the community, restructuring the educational system, or providing any form of economic support. If history had shown us anything, it is that we can not depend solely on the governmental system to provide equitable access to economic, social, and educational opportunities.…

African Americans that have driven the cause of securing Black rights fall into obscurity outside of the Black community. Americans such as Anthony Bowen, Bayard Rustin, and William C. Parker. Parker, a catalyst for the civil war, is commonly a name that is only mentioned if there is spare time to be filled in a speech. Black lives and accomplishments must no longer be understated but instead underscored. This is the change that I hope to bring to the university.…

I have a friend with blue skin and red eyes. Although this statement may not be entirely true, I often find myself around some of the strangest but most amazingly unique individuals. There are more than seven billion people on this planet. Human beings of all different ethnicities, cultures, physical characteristics, and personalities exist everywhere. I was introduced to this grand perception in greater depth when I attended EXPLO at Yale in the summer of 2014.…

How It Feels to Be a Minority Never have I ever felt that I have an ethnic identity, and I have never known what it is like to belong to a minority group up until I came to Hartford. The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines minority as a group of people who are different from the larger group in some way such as ethnicity or religion (“minority”). Via two encounters in Hartford, I realized that I also belong to an ethnic group, which had never determined my idnentity before. In Hungary, the population is not really diverse.…

My first time going to a predominantly white school, was freshman year in high school. I went from being part of the majority, in middle school, to being one of the only black students in my school. The four years I spent at Community School of Davidson, my high school, proved and diminished some stereotypes, gave me a culture shock and allowed me to grow and become comfortable around people who aren’t always like me. The school I attended is located in a semi-wealthy suburb of Charlotte, NC.…
