I feel that, in the same nature, indigenous religions were affected so harshly by the rise of Christianity and the traveling of settlers. It is sad to think that even today there are Native Americans fighting the government in order to keep their land safe. I grew up going to this one art class and every single class the teacher would read us a new tale. I used to be so entrapped with the mythology behind every story. It wasn't until I had outgrown the class age limit, that the teacher finally gave me the book she read from. It was then that I learned of these "indigenous religions,"

My experiences over the last six years living in NYC have shaped me into the approachable and compassionate person I am today. I have been immersed in a melting pot with many different culturally and economically diverse populations. These unique experiences have broadened my horizons and allowed me to gain valuable communication skills and the ability to connect with people from all walks of life. I searched out opportunities to give back and help the people in my community both in volunteering in hospitals, educating high school students, and interning in private practices. I even traveled with the organization Medlife, setting up a medical clinic to provide basic medical care and education to people in the poor and underserved communities surrounding Lima, Peru.…

“Shes coming back right?” a baffled 7 year old asks in response to the appalling news of her mother’s death. A vibrant imagination is accompanied by a crushing pain of reality that trails behind it ; I discovered this when I heard the words “no” . 10 years later, that conversation lingers in my head and holds not a cacophonous nor euphonious sound, but instead holds the neutral tone of reality, an alarm . As routine , at 6a.m., I hear a melodious alarm followed by the pitter-patter of my aunt who is getting ready for work.…

My experience with the after school book club at Madison Elementary today was an exciting yet my patience was tested by a seven year old little boy named Jose. Today I was excited to see if my group would enjoy the book, “Where the Wild Things Are,” due to the fact everyone agreed they enjoy reading adventure books. Consequently, one of my group members, Jose, had already read the book and watched the movie and let the whole group know it was “boring.” Already bored he instantly lost interest in the book and the group and was making it known by distracting the other group members around him. Usually his partner in crime, Gilbert, agrees with him and goes along with him but this time was different and he ignored his friend because he was actually…

I think a writer's voice is their own style of writing, a perspective, and a tone. Our style is the mechanics of our storytelling. I think over time our natural style will develop and as we read various works, we begin to be influenced by the styles of those we choose to read. We begin to pick up bits and pieces along the way and eventually define our own unique style of writing. Experiences is what will shape our voice.…

To the Hero Ever since I was a little boy, I’ve been a huge fan of comic book superheroes. Anybody that knows me could tell you that. When I came to the U.S I didn't have many friends, I wasn't aware of what to expect on my first day of school. The school I attended was low in diversity, the first day of school I came to a class filled with Caucasians, I was amazed that no diversity was in play, as I went through the day students came and asked me where I was from, I happily replied India. As soon as I said India kids got more interested in hearing about my stories and how it was different living there. I was amazed how many people were interested in my culture, I was curious as well, and I started asking people around about their culture and its uniqueness. Through talking about our culture I quickly made friends and learned about their racial backgrounds.…

I plan on bringing multiple topics from class into my story and make each topic into a character. For example: A Feminist character for one of the Feminist articles, a ‘disabled’ individual for the disability article, an oppressor for one of the oppression articles, etc. I want to share their lives in a world where they are all classmates who do not get along. The students end up going on a three week vacation together to Rome, Italy in the summer and are held captive instead for two months by a familiar man who dictates their every move. The goal of this piece is to travel through the characters lives to understand each individual's specific qualities/ways of life and become more liberated as a group by the end.…
