Personal Narrative: Dickinson College Experience

In psychology, every student learns about the mere-exposure effect; a psychological phenomenon by which people tend to develop a preference for things because they are familiar to them. For myself, Dickinson College is right in my backyard and has always been in my thoughts. As I developed my interest in Dickinson during my early years of high school, I decided that I wanted to be involved in Dickinson life as much as possible. At that time, I would sign up for two college visits that provided great knowledge about the campus and all Dickinson has to offer. Once I saw the campus I decided to partake in a day visit where I would acquire a feel for the classes in the archaeology department. Coincidentally, I even had the unexpected opportunity to take a test on archaeological sites and artifacts which the class had spent weeks preparing. The day visit was …show more content…
Throughout my life I have been told amazing tales about lost treasure supposedly hidden within the caves bordering Carlisle and this cave system has a tunnel running to the Carlisle barracks. Also, as a child, I was shown the wall surrounding the old graveyard and the faces carved into it supposedly by the prisoners who constructed it. These among others helped establish firm roots within Carlisle that would produce a fantastic college experience and as I start to meet people who come to Dickinson from other states, I would be able to share these stories to help them value the college even more. In addition to passing on these tales and legends, I would be able to show them some of the restaurants and shops that may be unnoticed including the Hamilton and the Atom Bomb. I personally feel that a vital part of the college experience is having people who enjoy Carlisle as much as I do and hopefully these stories will help them grow a love for Carlisle and

My first memory at North Carolina Governor’s School West is of crying next to my parents on a bench under a giant tree. It was move-in day for the five-and-a-half-week session, and I was already sure that they would be the worst weeks of my life. I was terrified; I knew no one except two students from my high school, who were rising juniors and to whom I had never spoken before. After that stressful first day, I fell asleep unsure of how I could make it on my own in a place filled with such talented, intelligent, and unfamiliar people. Around the same time I started taking an interest to academics I was watching various shows, one being “Bates Motel”. Coincidentally the following month my counselor put up a poster with just the name of the college “Bates”.…

If there was ever a school that matched my personality, it would be Washington and Lee. Its small, traditional campus prefers a warm, but not a "sweat your socks off" climate, just as I do. It is a school that was instituted on the backs of Southern history and remains as a breeding ground for the traditional past. In reading Southern literature this fall, including the works of William Faulkner and Eudora Welty, the themes of the South became increasingly relevant and applicable to me.…

Governor’s School Last summer, I attended governor's school west where three hundred and twenty-five bright and open-minded students from all across North Carolina gathered for five and a half weeks in a college campus setting. At first, we thought of it as a sacrifice of our summer to glamorize our college application, but throughout the program we experienced things that exceeded beyond our expectations.…
