Personal Narrative: Developmental Stages

Improved Essays
Developmental Stages
This term is interesting to me for multiple reasons. I enjoy watching those around me grow and develop. I find fascinating how different people mature. How some pick up different ideas and things quicker than others. For example, watching one of my friends lose her mother last year has taught her to mature and try to become a mother figure herself for her younger siblings. I, on the other hand, have my mother, therefore, I do not have to be a mother figure to my sister. Different situations and hardships people face play a major role in developmental stages.
Defense Mechanisms
When I hear the term, battle comes to mind. I interpret this term as a means for survival. Soldiers who go to war do not sign up and go into battle

The Truth of Growing Up As a child all I wanted to do is just grow up and be an adult. As I grew older and taken on more responsibilities, I realized that growing up is not all that exciting and is actually difficult. In the final year of high school when college is the big stress, all the teachers want is to prepare us for the long papers, difficult tests and more stress. In the back of mind I’m thinking, wow this is going to be stressful, I don’t want to go to college anymore. Well my wish came true…

The norm may not always be the right way to go. I no longer want to be a part of a popular or important group of people, if I feel that what the group is doing or believes in is wrong, even if it means I'm not a part of the norm. I am not afraid to stand out on my own. I have challenged this belief for many years. When I was in elementary school, I was bullied by a group of girls that I hung with, looked up to and idolized.…

Pharrell Williams once said that "If you go with fear you will fail. But if you go with faith you will be fine. You are capable of so much". This quote, along with many others written in the margins of my notebooks, exemplifies the emotional battle that is constantly occurring inside my head. I believe that not one single event truly signified the life-long transition from childhood to adulthood in my life, rather my view of the world and those around me changed drastically as I aged.…

From the day, I first started school, I have always had trouble learning.…

Contributing to society and doing things to benefit future generations are important needs at the generativity versus stagnation stage of development. Generativity refers to making something through caring for others, creating things and accomplishing things that make the world a better place. This stage links between generations, and indicates a possible and desirable feature of adult individuals in society. I am 40 years old, and according to the Eric Erikson’s theory of development, I am in generativity versus stagnation stage of development. I did not make any purposeful arrangement regarding my generativity so far, however part of my current activities can be accounted to my generativity.…

Throughout my journey as a graduate student I feel as though I have spent almost more time reflecting on my life than counseling. More so, being able to reflect on ones life can give such beautiful insight, it can be challenging, however, once you allow it to happen it’s like an addiction, you can’t stop. Therefore, when finding out about this paper I was surprisingly interested and excited to reflect on my life through a developmental lens. More importantly, there were incidences that stood out like a sore thumb, from my mother’s pregnancy to my early childhood years.…

This will be a personal story of my own development as an individual and will examine the developmental concepts of family influences, friendship, and establishing identity. My life started off a few months earlier than it should have. That was a very early obstacle that I don’t even remember. It is speculated that being a premature baby might have caused any of the early childhood obstacles that I encountered. As far as I remember, the first few years of my life were fine. In kindergarten, according to my dad, I was very talkative and liked to help kids with “subjects that I excelled in, such as spelling”.…

As a so called “youngster”, to my development stages as an adolescent, I have obtained much knowledge about the complexity of life. I have learned so much in my 17 years on this earth, but I still have yet to learn a lot. Most of my knowledge has been gained through the process of trying new things and gaining experience. I have also matured over time and realized the importance of many things. My process of thinking was different as I started out in my early life.…

We were all incredibly bored and we were just sitting around not knowing what to do. Finally, being the five year olds we are, my friends and I decided to play “extreme” hide and seek together. We all went outside to establish the rules. The rules were not very descriptive, but basically we decided that we were going to play a different version of hide and seek, where everyone ran and then formed alliances or stayed on their own. Then, we had to try to find each other and “kill” the other with a long stick.…

August of 2009 I was starting my seventh grade year and I felt excited but scared because I knew that my classes were going to get harder. The fact that I was growing up also scared me because I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life. I was excited because I had one more year left till I was out of middle school.
