I'm going to tell you about all the adversity that one girl, young lady, woman could go through.

Hopefully, I could help someone by sharing my story with you all.

So, sit back and relax while I try and put it in words.

This is 1962, a four year old little girl was just taken from everything and everyone that she knew and put into a whole completely different setting with people that she didn't know, and it was done to protect her. She didn't understand what was going on, all she knew was she was very afraid and confused but she was really truly a survivor, even at four years old, strong enough to ensure some of the worst times in anyone's life, especially a child.

As a child growing up in Rhode Island, the smallest state in the Union, the idea of a vast planet brimming with civilization and culture was more like something out of a fairy tale than it was reality. So, when my father announced that we would be leaving the country to go to Scotland, the home of his and my ancestors, my world began to expand at a rapid pace. This trip could not have been timed more perfectly. The summer of 2007 marked the end of fourth grade, my first year at Saint Mary Academy Bay View.…

“Congratulations!!” read one post on a friend’s Facebook wall, the day after she landed an office job in her field. “So amazing!” read another. “Are you ready for your big-girl job?” asked a third well-wisher, accompanied by a GIF of Amy Poehler as Leslie Knope. “I can’t believe I finally have a real job” was the text she sent me a few days later, from the comfort of her desk, where she had been hired to do operations work for an organization she had once, a few years prior, interned for.…

This is my junior year at Southridge High School, and I am very pensive when I ponder the matter of selecting the most appropriate college. My predetermined purpose is to find an affordable four-year college that will prepare me for medical school. Because of that, I narrowed my choices to Harvard University and Portland State University. After considering both colleges, I decided that Portland State was the most appropriate college based on my predetermined purpose. The most important factor was which college could provide the best chemistry courses to help me acquire a major in chemistry.…

The exact moment I sat down in the car his chiseled jawline tightened, and his brown eyes flashed heat waves at me. I could see his white knuckles as he held onto the steering wheel. I had a lump in my throat that felt like I swallowed a golf ball. I am running, again, it’s exhilarating, just as I remembered, but this time something feels different; maybe I just understand it better this time. I had been little the first time, and the second, the third time had been only a few years ago but those few short years had felt like a long time. Now it’s my fourteenth birthday, not that it matters, and we are running again. Johnathan had been afraid for a few days, growing more anxious at every squeal of tires and every bang of car doors, the tipping point had come when he had heard a car engine last night. Non-government vehicles hadn’t been allowed on the roads after dusk for almost three years and it was one law nobody had ever dared break.…

A few years ago it was not hard for me to imagine a life where I could not rely on myself to get where I needed to go. Suppose it was imperative that an individual get to the bank to cash their paycheck, or trying to get to a friend's house but with no one to drive you there. Recalling my younger years it was my belief that my sixteenth birthday would be one of the greatest days of my life. Waking up before the sun had risen was a rarity for my in that particular time, but I had no problems doing it on that glorious morning. I had been learning to drive for over six months and was ready to start a new part of my life where mobility was a much less complicated problem.…

“ My day has been as slow and as bad as a turtle trying to run” I whispered to myself sitting in my HAP class with my head in my arms. After a bad long day of school, I decided to hang out with some friends, trying to find a way to procrastinate even longer to do all my homework. I asked a few of my close friends, Lily and Jackson, to hang out and maybe go get something to eat. After the loud bell rang to dismiss all the students to go home, I met up with my friends and we were on our way. We walked out the big doors and right as I walked out the cold harsh air hit my face.…
