Personal Narrative: Defining Myself As A Writer

Improved Essays
How would I define myself as a writer? I would say inexperienced. I am on the road to learning how I can become better. In school I was never good with my words. I could barely say what I wanted to let alone write it on paper. In high school, they have you write small papers here and there but nothing too extravagant. It was still hard for me to write any type of paper. Even now I struggle with writing down or even saying what I mean. But, the farther I go on with my education I am hoping I can progressively get better at both those subjects. I have very few experiences with writing. In high school is when I had the most experiences. I remember the hardest paper I have ever written. I was in middle school; I was taking French and our teacher assigned us to write a paper about France. We had to pick a subject about France like food, culture, monuments and so on. I had the roughest time researching topics and trying to put what I learned in to my own words while trying to have it make sense. I felt so low of myself because I thought it was going to be an easier paper than it was. I also have experience writing some papers in my English class last semester. Luckily for me, the assignments were not as difficult and were easier …show more content…
I feel like my weaknesses outweigh my strengths. I am weak when it comes to wording. I am awful at putting words together to describe what I am saying. I always want to sound as smart as I possibly can so I am constantly trying to expand my vocabulary. I try to look up words to better replace others. I also have trouble with making my writings flow. I tend to just write what automatically comes to me. I am very good at organizing my paragraphs and planning my paper. I have no issues with researching a topic or knowing where to put which subject for each paragraph. I do well with writing I just have problems with making details for each paragraph. I will get the big picture but details are my

I never considered myself to be an excellent writer but still thought I wrote well enough to get my point across without confusing the reader too much. However, any confidence that I had in my writing skills was lost for a short time when I had to write my first timed essay in school. Luckily, the timed essay assignment also helped me see that I needed to work on my writing and, as a result, actually turned out to be a more positive experience rather than a negative one. It was just another regular school day that was near its end, and I had one more class to go to before everyone was released to go home.…

Project #1: Literacy Narrative I remember walking across the lawn from our tiny add on classroom, up the stairs, and into the second grade class. Walking to my assigned desk directly in front of the window, I sat down in front of my best friend. Sometimes, sleepy and tired, I stared at the giant oak tree in our school yard and watching the clouds move. My first experience with writing was in fourth grade.…

For most students, the moment the bell rings for summer, they never speak to their teachers again. Usually this applies to me as well, but last year, it didn't. Ms. Dirmeyer, my 7th grade Language Arts teacher, still keeps in touch with me, even though she’s not my teacher anymore. She takes interest in my writing, and has done several things to help me improve. Ms. Dirmeyer sends me emails with writing tips, along with worksheets directed towards improving my writing.…

I like to believe that when I write for mainly school I'm a good writer because I spend lots of time to actually figure out what I'm going to say, it's not easy to just have a topic and go off that. I feel as if I'm an average writer, someone who writes at least monthly but doesn't want to write everyday. One time when I was in the 5th grade we had a program called young author where you got to create a story and you had to put it in a book. You also had to color pictures in it. Basically a children's book…

I didn’t know what I was in for after that day. A writer’s key experiences is what makes them different from other writers and is crucial to their growth as a writer. The writing I composed in Mrs. Heningburg’s class was central to my development as a writer because it made me more confident in my writing and made me more aware of others reading my work as a writer. After hearing my last writing assignment's result in the class, I started expecting a high scoring on my writing works. The compliment about my essay from my sixth-grade teacher changed me, so let's start from the beginning.…

My writing isn’t nearly as advanced as I would like it to be, and this is mostly because I don’t write on my free time. I only ever sit down to write when I need to for an assignment or if it is something for work, however, I do occasionally make journal entries, but it is very rare. Even though I don’t write very often, when I do, it isn’t that hard. I ranked myself a six on challenged to gifted writer because I don’t find writing a challenge, but I am not that great at it either. On the other scales I put myself down as a five.…

Over the first semester I feel I have been appropriately challenged in the area of writing we have done this year. I learned many new skills, but the most important one involves English and how to write properly. As for the first writing, I really did not understand what was right and what was wrong. Because I never paid close attention to specific rules in how to write. I truly believe it has been hard for me.…

But the main focus is on improving what you do. The biggest struggle I face when it comes to writing is not knowing how to structure and organize a paper. Wondering where and how to start will automatically make me lose my confidence. Sometimes I will take hours trying to figure out how to start the first sentence. There is an emotional stage I go through every time I write a paper, where I have been at it for five minutes…

The papers weren 't too bad to write. I can actually say that I enjoyed writing a few of them because the topic was something that would interest me on any given day. There were three topics that stood out to me: race/ethnicity, deviance and norm, and social class. When I first saw the syllabus, I instantly knew paper four would interest me the most which was on race and ethnicity in America. This was a topic that instantly caught my eye, because…
