Personal Narrative: Defining Moments And Become Who You Are

This week we began to discuss chapters 5 and 6: Defining Moments and Become Who You Are. Defining moments can reveal, test, and shape who you will become as a leader and person. I myself have experienced a defining moment during college. I currently work as a student technician on campus and have had my fair share of new supervisors. One supervisor in particular did a great job in regard to his work, but pushed boundaries when it came to private matters. He believed that since he was an open book, everyone else should be one two. At one point, he started a conversation with me that made me feel uncomfortable. He was trying to force some very personal details out of me and I felt obligated since he was my boss. After the incident, I avoided …show more content…
When asked why he wanted to present, Lewis just said he wanted to earn his spot on this time. While this is a nice statement, it was a little too subtle to get at the real issue. As an African American, I understand why he did not come straight out with his thoughts on being used as a token black. It would have created an awkward, negative relationship between Lewis and the other team members on the trip. They would probably be uncomfortable working with him on future occasions and could share the negative experience with upper management. Also, the team members may not be the ones in control of choosing Lewis or other African Americans as token blacks. This appears to be a company-wide phenomenon and making a statement to only a select few who may not control the culture probably wouldn’t change anything. I would have said I was uncomfortable with being a part of something that I did not work on and presenting would help ease the discomfort. While this seems similar to Lewis’s statement, mine specifies the discomfort of the situation. I would like the team to clearly know that I was uncomfortable with going to the presentation in the first place without mentioning the reason why I was chosen. I believe this statement would better show Lewis’s work ethic while addressing the issues of his selection

Blacks in general have been treated unfairly in this world for a very long time and it is really ridiculous. That is why I enjoy seeing athletes taking a stand on issues like that and speaking out. These athletes are some of my and other people’s role models. That is why everyone should speak up on all issues all around the world. It does not matter what color you are.…

This argument affects the merit of the company. If a company were only to be worried about not discriminating against a minority group, then they would tend to lean back from hiring the white male and would hire, for example, the African American female. But while doing this, if the white male were to be more qualified for the job, then that is an argument of merit. Members of a historically discriminated group are in effect not necessarily victims; consequently, compensation is not necessarily owed, in this case, hiring the African American female. Hettinger has a list of reason of how failing to hire the most qualified person is unjust.…

Four our guest speakers we had the privilege to have Yvette and Jonathan to represent the African American group. Among these two guest speakers I was able to see more similarities than differences. Jonathan explained about his background which helped us have a better understanding that the black population is blended from different backgrounds and Yvette shared with us how her education and hard work made a change in her life to get out of a small city called Lenare. Both Yvette and Jonathan expressed themselves how they felt about racism affecting their life’s. I was able to relate to both speakers, but more to Yvette more because she mentioned she grew up in the same small city I am currently living at.…

The past few years have been very difficult for every black person living in the United States. Disastrous things have been happening, from Trayvon Martin to Sandra Bland. It seems like we cannot go one day without hearing another tragedy within the black community appear on the news. The fight to end racial inequality seems everlasting, many people are tired of it, and not just average black citizens, even the celebrities. Many African American stars are too scared of the media’s reaction to voice their opinions.…

When asked to define myself in one paper, I find it hard to show the details that I want to in the right light. When asked about my future after high school, I also have a hard time describing everything I want to get done because there are far too many things to name. The quote “ _____” (i want to be everyone and do everything and there isn’t enough life to do it all in) describes me to a tee, and I believe this college is the place I could do this in. Being a shy person for most of my life, many things were difficult for me. Specifically, last summer I had the opportunity for a summer job.…

African-Americans still struggle to make their mark on corporate America. Many offices don’t respect African-Americans regardless of their background. For example, Dr. Saunders, a doctor of education reiterates the struggle he faces every day, “I feel I’m always proving myself” (Byrd 1993). As an educated intelligent man he struggles to receive acknowledgment and respect from his coworkers (Byrd 1993). This prejudice, whether it is on purpose or not, shapes the way corporate America reacts to men and women of color.…

“Shes coming back right?” a baffled 7 year old asks in response to the appalling news of her mother’s death. A vibrant imagination is accompanied by a crushing pain of reality that trails behind it ; I discovered this when I heard the words “no” . 10 years later, that conversation lingers in my head and holds not a cacophonous nor euphonious sound, but instead holds the neutral tone of reality, an alarm . As routine , at 6a.m., I hear a melodious alarm followed by the pitter-patter of my aunt who is getting ready for work.…

The company got what they wanted by having an African American at the presentation and Lewis was able to settle his internal battle in a way that was acceptable to him. Lewis’s choice to attend the presentation and take an active role passes the utilitarian test because no other available action would create greater utility. For example, if he was to just attend the presentation and not speak. He may not have impressed his business associates and he would have some internal conflict with his ethnic background. Lewis’s decision passes the virtue ethics test as well.…

It 's apart of life that needs to to change. In the letter to my son he talks to him about how rough it is to be African American and growing up in this would. A big part of it is because of the racist things people say to African Americans, and the way they treat us. For a example going into different stores in a upscale place they don 't and can 't say what they want to us but they keep a close eye on us. Just because of the skin color.…
