Personal Narrative-Defining Moment

I scan through the score; my eyes rapidly swing back and forth like a metronome. With precision, I place my warm fingers on the cold black and white keys and, in an instance, I’m enraptured only with what is in front of me to begin Honeysuckle Rose by Louis Armstrong. As soon as I strike the keys, the balance of melody and base ring through the air in a symphony of sound. In my head, the cramped, but lively speakeasy erupts in an indulgence of dance. Sweat drips down the back of my neck, while my imaginary audience does the Charleston left and right. Ting! My eyes bolt shut as the last note resonates, stirring in my ears as a slight grin slips through my concentration. I relax my fingers and open my eyes. Instead of a musty bar, I’m in my living room and even though the piece is over the magic is still in the air. I love playing the piano. …show more content…
I practiced every day and had a lesson every week. I woke up early and practiced until my hands cramped. Whilst keeping up my repertoire, I also learned new material and studied musical theory. Scanning the internet, looking for something to spark a flame of inspiration, I wound up listening to Jeepers creepers by Louis Armstrong. The calm but energizing flow of music opened my eyes and allowed me to discover a brand new world. It was my first taste of jazz. The very next piano lesson I attended I rambled to my teacher about jazz and how I wanted to play soul music. Being able to improvise and create new, never before heard sounds was mind-boggling. I finally was able to express all of me. Ever since then, I became a jazz

Music has played a gigantic role in defining who I am. When I was little I was always involved in music. “A handful of moments I wished I could change, but I was carried away,” are the lyrics that remind a lot about myself. Growing up, and even about two years ago, I was insanely shy and did not talk much around people, friends, or family. The way I talked to people was in a timid, soft spoken way, which looking back, was awfully embarrassing. My friends and family would laugh at me because I could not talk well, and when I did talk, they acted as if I were a baby who just said its first words. With all of that nonsense going on, their idiotic response kind of made me not want to say anything anymore.…

It gives me something to look forward to, and the feeling of playing a six or seven page sonata that I’ve been practicing for months and months all the way through is, in my opinion, one of the best feelings in the world. I won’t deny that at times I’ve wanted to stop, and I’ve seriously contemplated throwing all of my music into a fire, but practicing makes me happy, and I know that I could never give it up. Music has influenced my life in more ways than I could count. If I had given up when I started playing, I wouldn't have met some of my best friends, I wouldn't be as willing to take on difficult challenges, I wouldn't have had as many opportunities as I've been fortunate enough to have, and I wouldn’t be nearly as successful as I am now.…
