Personal Narrative: Deer Hunting

Improved Essays
In my family most of us hunt deer with rifles and to us it's like a competition to shoot the biggest buck every year. Three years ago, my brother Andrew killed the biggest buck with 8 points. Two years ago, my brother Brad shot a 10 point buck. Last year my cousin got it with 9 points. So now, hunting season just started and anybody had a chance.
When I woke up it's 5:30 in the morning and I am really excited because today was the morning of the opener for deer hunting season. When we took showers we use the shampoo removed our body odor so that the deer couldn’t smell us. I had put on several layers of clothing for the cold snow that awaited with ice piercing wind that cuts across your face. After we were ready, we went in the garage to grab our orange winter coats and snow pants. Then we put scent killer that completely annihilated our odor.
My dad and my brothers were going to hunt on our plot of 60 acres of forest that is great hunting place. My cousin

The sunlight peeked over the empty horizon. I was sleeping for about an hour, he said he hasn't heard anything from when I went to sleep. The forest, full of trees and bushes with a clearing in the middle that we cleared out months before to have a chance to shoot a deer. The ground had been solid from the glistening snow that had fallen about a week ago. Bang!, we heard something moving around on the roof, It hopped off to a nearby branch overhead, it was only a squirrel looking for some acorns. There was a faint noise to my right that my cousin did not hear so I nudged him and quietly told him about it. As the noise got louder and louder we quietly put our guns up and waited. A small doe walks out if the forest into the clearing and we both knew that it's not big enough to shoot so we lowered our guns back on the floor. Hours go by without seeing

ALTHOUGH RESEARCH CONFIRMS that the whitetail rut takes place at almost the exact same time every year, most hunters know that the rut’s intensity varies from day to day. As much as your head spins with the mental images of scrapes, full moons, rubs, monster bucks, and rut-crazed chase scenes, the best times to be in the woods will rarely coincide with calendar anniversaries. Through years of personal experience and research gathered from other hunters, Cory Wiedel is one of the most accomplished whitetail hunters. He has taken 11 Boone and Crockett– class bucks in the past six years, and he places a priority on going after his scouted target bucks only when he recognizes that the conditions are favorable. “There are certain weather-related…

If you didn’t know this already, guns are not the only weapon you can hunt deer with! Just because the masses may take to the field on opening day of gun season in November, it doesn’t mean the woods will be standing room only come September 1st. Archery hunters on public lands are only a fraction of rifle hunters that hunt public land. In many states archery hunters have two full months of hunting free of gun hunters. This is a perfect opportunity to get in the woods and tag an early season whitetail.…

Deer hunting is a great sport I love the excitement and the rush that you get from an animal. I am always looking to improve on techniques for being quiet when the deer are approaching my stand I like to stand when a deer is coming than sitting down because it gives me more room and I can pull my bow a lot easier than sitting down. But some hunters like to sit down so they don’t scare the deer away, but I think it’s more of a challenge to do. As a deer hunter there is a right time and a wrong time for standing up when you are in an treestand like for one reason it’s a risky maneuver when you are trying not to spook a deer when standing up.…

In mid October early in the morning the day was crisp and chill. The sun was just burning the morning fog off of the lakes cool waters. The dew on the grass and trees was glistening from the sunlight and the bird were singing their songs of jubilee . The entire woods were peaceful and still, and the sunrise was magnificent. During this moment I realized how beautiful nature is when the outside world is a distant memory, and all we need to do is take advantage of the little things life gives us and never stress the big ones too much.…

My First Deer One brisk 30 degree day in January, when I was nine years old, was a day for which I was extremely excited. My dad got me out of school earlier that day, so we could go deer hunting. I had already shot a turkey the year before, so guns were nothing new to me. We made a quick stop at my house so that we could pick up the .243 youth edition, a really short barreled .243, that my dad had bought just about a month before so that we could go hunting, and I would actually be able to handle the gun. At this point we did not have the hunting land that we do today, so we went to my grandpa’s house and hunted in the clearing of trees behind his house.…

The rifle hunters want to be able to hunt longer and hunt some of the rut. Bow hunters “prefer the whitetail rut free of firearm” because it's nearly impossible to kill a deer with a bow after gun season had started. Rifle hunters get to hunt the rut but they don’t have a long time to hunt, so that is why they have a problem with how long rifle season…
