Personal Narrative: Dad, Time For Dinner

Improved Essays
“Dad, time for dinner.” and there is silence only, no reply. And then my father comes out from his room and grabs a. plate and goes back to his room with a gloomy look.
When I was twelve years old, my father didn’t talk to the entire family and avoided us for one year. He was under a lot of pressure and his youngest brother chose to leave my father’s company when my father really needed him. He was heart-broken. It was a really hard time for my mom and sister, but I think it shapes who I am today.
At first, the dinner table was always silent since my father never ate dinner with us in that one year. He also didn’t engage in any family activities – my mother, sister and I dragged ourselves to my grandmother’s birthday, my family’s new year

Five weeks ago, I would not have classified my childhood as privileged by any means; however, my perspective on a privileged lifestyle has shifted drastically within the past couple of weeks. Growing up, my dad was never in the home: he has severe depression and bipolar disorder and was institutionalized for a majority of my childhood. Due to this complication, my parents divorced when I was twelve. When Dad was released, my siblings, Rhianna, Kenzy, Kaelen, and I would move back and forth every week to a different parent’s household. This is retold in the story on page 50 where it states, “Eventually there came the time on a late summer afternoon just before my twelfth birthday when folks came to visit… My daddy hadn’t even bothered to tell me himself not to sit at his table. He had left that to my mama, and I resented not only him for it, but her too.” Paul is frustrated because he can not understand why Robert and his brothers can sit at his daddy’s table, but Cassie and him cannot. He feels as though his father only acknowledges him as his son when no folks are present. Another example to prove Paul’s obliviousness, is a time during the fall of Paul’s school years. Paul has come home from thanksgiving break only to find that Appaloosa, his horse, had seemed to be “manhandled,” this proven by the numerous amounts of bruises and cuts he was modeling.…
