I never sang in a church choir when I was younger. Never did I stand amidst a group of children and sing fearlessly, knowing that any slight mistake of mine might be masked by a chorus of melodies surrounding me; instead, as is done in my religion, I sang alone. We call them shabads- hymns, sung of the verses written by our gurus many centuries ago. I was classically trained from the age of 5, and by 10 I was the child star of our church. Though I was somewhat introverted, my confidence shined through when I sang on stage before hundreds of people. I remember how proud my parents used to be; how normal we seemed as a family. However, if there is one cliché I have learned to be true since those, my years of naivety, it is that change is constant. Oh, how change hit me like a tornado on a lonely day in my hometown of Fort Worth, Texas. I was only 12 when my parents told me they were getting divorced. I wasn’t oblivious to the fact that they fought, but I never expected such drastic measures to be taken. I had been living in a protected bubble, where I was taught the humble ways of my parents’ Indian culture; but that day, my bubble burst, and I was faced with the challenge of making a terrifying decision that would determine my …show more content…
The three years I spent with my mother in India were the turning point of my youth; not only did I grow in age and academia, but my personality transformed from one of delicate shyness to bold confidence. India gave me what is now my favorite pastime- writing poetry. But more importantly, it gave me the experience to be able to proudly call myself a world citizen. After all, we must have the capability to shape ourselves in order to be presentable to society as not just citizens of a nation, but citizens of the world. It brings me great joy to say that I now find no difficulty in adjusting to the social climate wherever my travels take

‘Just one hour of this and you can go back to sleep’ was the phrase I groggily repeated to myself as I got ready to register for my freshman year of high school. Had I known that the mountain of paperwork I was about to fill out that late July morning would ultimately lead to me finding my passion, I would have definitely been a lot more enthusiastic. I traded all my information for my schedule, only to realize that there was one slight problem: P.E. was on my list of courses for the year. Physical education? I sought out my counselor immediately to fix this quandary.…

When I was younger my mother once told me of a biblical story in which a town would come together in order to purge themselves of sin. They would gather up a lone goat and hurl rocks and spew profanities, in many ways harming it within an inch of its life as it bled out upon the earth. They would then open the gates of the town and let the goat run away and carry all of their sins, transgressions, and their insecurities out into the wilderness in where the goat, along with all their sin, would perish. This in turn purged the town and cleansed them of their ways until it was time again to rid themselves of their wickedness. Now, as a young child I was appalled by such a story and such horrible people who could inflict pain upon an innocent being…

I am an alien, an Italian immigrant who first learned how to change when he was eleven years of age. I'm going to start off by saying that in Italy there is a scarcity of change, making personal development seldom welcomed. People remain in the same socioeconomic class as their parents; the son of a butcher is destined to become a butcher himself. People rarely change houses or move to new cities; a person is expected to live and die in the same small town. People are afraid to embark on new culinary journeys; an Italian is taught to only eat Italian foods, no exceptions.…

Growing up throughout elementary school, I always knew my parents would eventually get a divorce. I had always known my parents were going to get a divorce. When the day came at the beginning of sixth grade, my parents sat me down and told me that they were getting a divorce. At the time, I didn’t really know what to expect, but I didn’t let it bother me. Going throughout middle school and high school, having divorced parents disrupted my plans, gave me 2 homes, and I went down a path that I would have not suggested as a growing teen.…

When I was five, my father asked me if I would like to learn martial arts. I was enticed by the “arts”, and agreed to what I thought was some form of painting. Although this was dispelled in my first lesson, I found a quiet sense of purpose in the rituals of the classes. My first year consisted of little more than striking the air in front of me, but I eventually learned a myriad of forms, drilled into my head by constant practice. The discipline of each form fascinated me, and I quietly submitted my entirety to perfecting every movement and breath.…

I never thought I could feel so much happiness than when I knew I was impacting a child life for the better. I would rush home from school, change into my work uniform, and soak up as much sun as I possibly could knowing I wouldn’t see or feel its warmth for the rest of the day. My bleak attitude during depressing winter days completely revolved once I stepped into my classroom; every day thirteen chubby two-year old would run to me exclaiming how they missed me and how their scribbled drawings were just for me. Their parents saw my commitment and regularly told me stories about how their little one now knew the words “spectacular” and “illuminating” or they used the bathroom all by themselves singing the potty song I had made up the day before.…

There was a competition the church would take a group of kids to where you could do various activities and singing was all I wanted to do.
