Personal Narrative: Cross-Country Ski Team

Improved Essays
I wanted to kill my brother. Without my consent, he had just signed me up to compete for the position of captain on my cross-country ski team. I know what you’re thinking. On one hand, my running coach had told me I had leadership potential, but on the other hand, I wasn’t prepared to compete with the two more popular candidates. Could I do this? The head ski coach stood up and introduced the first candidate. Like me, the kid had second thoughts about his campaign, and he immediately dropped out. It was my turn. I had to give a speech. My hands were sweaty. My mind went blank. All eyes were on me as, in a moment of panic, I stammered that I also wished to withdraw. Instant relief washed over me like an unyielding wave flooding the beach; I didn’t have to give a speech or face the disappointment …show more content…
The assistant coach told us to start boarding the bus, then asked for help loading the waxing benches, blanket tubs, and other miscellaneous ski gear. I promptly dropped my bag and grabbed a stack of bins, asking where they should go. As I headed out towards the bus, I realized I didn’t see any of the captains helping. Once the gear was all loaded, I found most of them lounging on the toasty bus. At the race, a few of the captains pitched in; but again, it was a few unsung heroes (including me) doing their work. We erected the tent in the cold, windy, Alaskan morning, while everyone else was relaxing and sleeping in the warm chalet. I was really regretting my decision to withdraw from the captain elections; I wanted to be seen as a dependable leader by the coaches and my teammates, not as some unknown

My Cross Country/Track coach is one of the best men I know. He not only betters his runners by teaching us, but he also runs with us. Pushing us to greatness with words of encouragement, he implores us to leave all energy on the course/track and teaches us to be exceptional people outside of running. He expresses to us that no matter what we do, he will always be proud of each member of the team; therefore, our actions can’t change his love for us. That’s why it was devastating when he told us before the past track season, that he would not be able to coach for the remainder of the running season from February until we initiated winter conditioning November.…

I was so happy I was near the front of the line because I wanted to stand out and make them remember me. While sitting there group after group kept going in it was getting close to my turn. While lined up behind these huge gray doors waiting for the judges to call us in, I didn’t think I could make it. My knees started shaking and I felt the butterflies in my stomach going crazy. Stepping on that blue mat I thought I had forgot what I had learned that week to make the team.…

At some point in every person's life, they will have a special experience that will stick with them forever. Approaching freshman volleyball season, the upperclassman spoke highly of the importance of overpowering TC West. As a ninth grader, I had the mindset that I would be playing for the freshmen team.
