Personal Narrative: Criminal Justice Internship

Improved Essays
Overall I have had a positive experience during my internship. This internship has taught me a lot. I have been able to network with multiple criminal justice professionals, which has allowed me to see all of my options after graduation. Working at the Coroner’s Office has confirmed that I do want to continue working in the criminal justice field as an investigator. I really enjoy being able to speak for the decedent and help other agencies gather the information they need for their investigation. I also enjoy being able to help the families get the answers they are looking for so they can try to find closure during this difficult time. While being on scene I have had the opportunity to speak to multiple IMPD homicide detectives, they have …show more content…
Starting out with the deputies, there were two deputies that I felt took me under their wing and taught me everything they know. They were always asking me to go on runs and helping me with ask tasks I needed to complete. My supervisors also helped me with anything I needed. I was the assistant to the Chief Deputy Coroner this has allowed me to create a professional relationship with her that I believe will help me continue into the criminal justice field. I think the only way the experience could have been more meaningful would have been to have a more organized intern program. Our main point of contact was in Texas for the entire month of June, this made communication difficult and occasionally we were waiting till the last second to receive our monthly schedules. There were also some deputies who did not know how the internship program worked so we were occasionally given tasks we were not suppose to complete. For example, one of the deputies saved all of her phone consults from the day and then gave them to me to enter in ten minutes before I was suppose to leave. I had to explain to her that I would have put her phone consults in the database if she had given them to me sooner but since she waited till the end of the day she would need to put them …show more content…
I believe I gained a large amount of experience that will put me above other candidates when applying for jobs in the future. I believe the one thing I could have done to make this experience more meaningful would have been to make myself available on nights and weekends. This would have given me the experience of working while the front office is closed. Night shifts are also a lot different than day shifts because more interesting calls tend to come out during night shift. Since I was unable to be available during these times I did miss out on a few interesting cases. I also think I could have used pathology a little more. I was not interested in pathology coming into this internship and I am still not interested. However, I could have used my time back there asking questions and trying to learn more about how an autopsy is completed. I was able to watch quite a few exams however because the doctors are trying to concentrate I only asked questions when I was working with certain

I have done my fall internship at the same school but during the day. I feel that there is a lot I can do to support the students both academically and emotionally. During the first meeting with the counselor she expressed that being bilingual and bi-cultural will help. I know that there are not many opportunities to talk or have sessions with students, since they don’t have elective classes where I can see them, but I will try my best to be flexible with their schedules. I found out that they have a student government association, so I will try to be involved in their activities,…

I also assisted with child abuse and neglect investigations (CAN), intake, individualized service plans (ISPs), comprehensive family assessments (CFAs), entered data into Family, Adult, and Child Tracking System (FACTS), and continued to monitor the families I serve through home visitations. My favorite part of the internship experience outside of increasing the morale around the office, has been to work with families through the ISP process. This process is put in place in efforts to reunify the family. It gives me great joy to watch the family work on a plan to help them gain custody of their children.…

We have three team leads that had the pleasure of helping out, they really love my team effort since I have been employed with Methodist the longest. Work in a group is not the easiest thing to do but it takes having a great positive attitude towards what you are trying to achieve in life to not let it affect your job. The number one goal I set for the internship experience was graduating this December with my BS in Human Resource Development. Graduating is very imperative to my life achievements because earning my degree not only increases my earning potential, but I also gain knowledge, expertise, and my ability to grow mentally and physically as a women.…

ding. If I were in this situation as the parole officer I would do my best to try and help to mother, in whichever way possible. I know this would go against my beliefs and rules that I must follow as a parole officer but I still think I would try my hardest to help this mother get back on her feet and be able to provide for her children. I think many people would jump the gun and file a violation report on this specific issue, as she is violating her probation, but I don’t feel that would be the best way to approach this situation.…

We finally started our shadowing shifts this week. I had switched with a friend in the internship, so I had to wake up early on a Tuesday to start my first shadowing shift. We were not told who we will be shadowing, and so I had a pleasant surprise when I found out my first hour was with Mariko. I had not worked much with her in my first semester working for CELT. She taught me the basics of what a student technologist does at the Teaching Learning Lab.…

During my internship experience, I learned a lot of things that I thought I knew but are misconstrued on. With that being said, I know everything must be done in decent order or this will cause chaos and lead to confusion. I also learned everything takes patience and is very time- consuming. I became frustrated, so many times and just wanted to give up, but I had to remind myself that hard times are going to come and everything is going to work out. Many times I sat on my bed crying because it seems like everything piled on me at one time.…

law firm internship. An agonizing few days passed as I waited for a reply, and I was ecstatic to learn that I had been chosen for the internship. No words could explain how excited I was but the smile that filled my face said it all. At this internship, I built upon what I learned at Hyde Square Task Force and developed more confidence and determination to succeed in a professional environment. Not only did I take Shakespeare, writing, public speaking, civil rights and art classes, but I also worked in an office, participated in community service events, and visited colleges, which all helped me explore and adapt to different ambiances of the work…

My ideal internship experience would involve working in a role where I am surrounded by people who encourage each other in a supportive environment where everyone has a unique contribution to the team. I would love to work in an environmental health field or in epidemiology where I can work behind the scenes to improve public health, as well as working directly with the public.
