Your peripheral vision is gone—there’s complete focus, then a silence so muted that all you know is the feeling of your heart beating. Then, as you stand there motionless, you feel the adrenaline. I mean really feel it—a syrup coursing through your veins, yet not a syrup as it moves faster than blood. You know when it hits your heart because it starts beating faster, faster, faster, and then the feeling is gone. Then everything is gone—emotions, breath, sensation… Then there is silence. Silence... Bang! This is what it feels like to start a race. It is a feeling that cannot be described with a single word. It is an awareness of self. It took me a very long time to find this feeling. Through many trials and failures, Inevitably I did find it, in a place called Crested Butte, Colorado. It was the home of a camp designed for runners around the country to train together at high elevation. It started with an awareness of my surroundings—The clouds, the smell of the mountain air, the feeling of the cool air rolling off the mountains, and the flowers blooming in patches of yellow and purple with stalks creating their own …show more content…
Admittedly, I was afraid to stay the maximum length of the camp, which was 40 days. So, I decided to stay only a portion of the camp. I then went on to thrive at the camp; after the first week I barely spoke to my parents; looking back it probably scared them. Then when it came time for me to leave, I did not feel the option was even there—I was either staying for 40 days, or I was going to be dragged out by force. Even though it may not sound like it I became very content and more mature at this camp. I learned basic responsibilities, how to do my laundry when I needed to, how to cook a meal without anybody else, how to do the dishes when needed, and how to live in an environment with other people while keeping everyone

Here I am today singing songs about the south-land;because I miss 'ole' 'bamy once again. Years ago I left my home state of Alabama, where the skies are so blue and I moved to the not so great state of Montana. Many people questioned me on why I moved to Montana, and my response back is because in that moment I felt like I needed a change, but in the end I think I made the wrong choice to move away from Alabama. But soon I will be back to sweet home Alabama,oh,Lord, I'm coming home to you. Back in early March of 1974,I was working at a local convenience store.…

With the windows down, the crisp, cool summer air permeated throughout my body, acquiring every hair to stand at attention. Buffalo surrounded and granged lazily through the corn fields that shot high to the sky, as if every row was assembled soldiers getting ready to march. South Dakota is known for open fields with a consumed, laid back lifestyle with not much ever going on. Going into the trip knowing this, I was not in the least bit excited. It was when I absorbed the laid back atmosphere and appreciated every single bit of their way of life.…

Throughout the course of my short seventeen years, I have grown and learned many things. I grew up in a small rural town called Elk Creek. There are no strangers in Elk Creek; people sleep with their doors unlocked and their windows open. Everyone who has grown up in a small town can agree that friendship and community become a second nature trait. Although I have copious amounts of love and respect for where I grew up; I believe that I do not belong there.…

Growing up in Vail, I would often ride the chair lift with strangers and they would ask, “Where are you from?” I would reply “here.” The people I shared the chairlift with would tell me how lucky I was, but I would just smile politely and nod, unaware of my fortune. I had grown up in mountains and didn’t know anything different. As I have gotten older and been fortunate enough to have traveled outside of my familiar mountain range, I have realized how intensely beautiful mountains are.…

You always hear about great legends, no matter where you are from. All my life I had heard about a great monsters who used to roam The Great Plains in Texas, but none of the stories matched the monster I had found. I lived in a small quaint house right outside of a town in the middle of the Texas Plains. Most of the townsfolk were superstitious. My mother was a carefree and spirited woman who let me roam the flat land, not troubled by the hideous monster myths.…
