Personal Narrative: Cradle Catholic

Improved Essays
I am what you would call a cradle Catholic. This means that I was born and raised Catholic. Everything that I have ever learned has been from a Catholic family, school, etc. Being Catholic defines who I am. That was not the case for everyone in my Family though. To get to me being raised Catholic you have to start somewhere. That somewhere is the story I am going to tell. It starts with my grandma, then it goes to my parents, it then ends with me.

My Grandma, Janet Orosz was born on September 20, 1944. Her parents never took her to any type of religious service as far as she can remember. That job was up to her older neighbors. They went to a church that wasn’t any specific denomination. It wasn’t Catholic or any other specific church, but

My grandpa or Nagypapa came over from Hungary during the Hungarian revolution. It was because of him that my dad was baptised Catholic. Mass was never the most important thing when he was growing up and even when my grandma went through the RCIA process. Even though they went pretty often up until my grandparents got divorced then that fell apart and that part of their lives was pretty much forgotten. It was until much later when my dad met my mom (who was cradle catholic) that he started to go to mass again and then because of that my grandma started to go again. They went to a couple of different parishes around Madison and Milwaukee until they found one that they liked the best. Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish and School. This was a huge part of my faith life because it was here that I had teachers and mentors that helped me find the God that I know personally now. It is IHM that helped along with my parents instill the values and faith that I believe in now. At the parish I was taught how to be respect in mass, how to sing in a choir, how to be an altar server, and more. What I remember best though was when one day one of the parishioners came up to me one day after communion and told me that you have to show more respect during mass and actively participate in mass. This was a little bit of a wake up call. After that The mass became more and I started to want to go to mass and I wanted to go more often. While all three generations have what may seem like different stories (which in some ways they are) they have one big similar thing. They all involve God. Every moment the three generations God was executing his most perfect and holy plan and every time that we messed up he was right there with an even better plan. When I think about where my family started and how it got to me it amazes me. While some families have some clear cut traditions mine doesn’t. The one thing we do have is family. We have a tradition of family. How we care for and when we have holidays spend time with. On both sides of my family getting together as a family has always been a major part. So if there was one tradition that I would continue on it would be family, the glue of

I am a proud Christian. I go to Crossway Baptist Church in Springfield and have been for basically my entire life. I believe that because my parents took me to church pretty much ever since I was born, that it’s the reason I have very straight forward morals and beliefs. I also believe it has had a major impact on who I have become as a person. I’m caring and loyal, the person my friends come to, to get things off their chest that they don’t feel like they can share with others.…

They had these ideas presented to them at a young age five days a week at school and going to mass on the weekends, while I went to public school and only went to mass on the weekends. As there is a big controversy between science and religion, I was brought up with both, therefore having my opinions swayed. Parents and grandparents, on the other hand, had a strong religious force, thus having their opinions on the religious…

Before I stepped into St. John the Evangelist Roman Catholic Church, I thought that attending Catholic Mass would not be all that different from the Protestant services I grew up attending. However, I felt out of place as soon as I walked through the front doors. Everything felt foreign to me; from the way the building was set up, to the way people behaved during the service, to the way everyone exited the church. As an outsider, I felt lost and almost lonely as the masses around me moved in unison and I was left trying to follow along as best I could. I did not feel that Mass was welcome and open as the services of the Protestant churches that I am familiar with.…

We try to go to Mass as often as we can, although sometimes life gets hectic and we cannot go. However, having a positive, Catholic role model in my mom really helps me grasp what it means to be Catholic and to worship God. While I may not agree with some of the tenets of Christianity and Catholicism, my mom explained to me that the worship that takes place within each religion is different for every person, and that whatever lies in my heart is a result of God’s will. That makes sense to me: worshipping a God that supports individual thought and my own interpretations, but still ‘controls’ who I am overall.…
