Personal Narrative: Connecting With Children

Improved Essays
For as long as I can remember, I have always had a desire to work with children. Being able to connect and understand the way kids think, I believe, helps build strong relationships with them. I believe that teaching is going to be the best opportunity for me to connect with young children and be a positive impact in many aspects of their lives. The first time I noticed that I had even the smallest influence on children was when I was volunteering at my district’s elementary school. I would go in and help with the same class at least two times per week after I was released from my high school. I discovered the more open I was with the students the faster they felt comfortable to confide in me. The relationships that I built with these kids developed quickly and by the end of the year, we …show more content…
I was very hopeful that an opportunity would arise. After a very short period of time, I was contacted by a family with three children. I had never watched that many kids at once without any help, but I thought I should give it a try. I scheduled a time to meet with the family to get a feel for what I was getting into but also so they could do the same with me. While meeting with these parents, I instantly felt comfortable and connected with the them as well as all three kids. Over time, as I would get them off the school bus and talk with them about their day, they continued to reveal more and more of themselves to me. Before I knew it, when their father would get home from work, they would ask him if he could go back so I didn’t have to leave. I had never imagined that the relationship that had blossomed between the children and me could be so

I have never been one to spring at opportunities that involved working with kids simply because I was disinterested. In the summer of 2015, my disinterest was turned into a passion when I met the children from Broadlawn. Broadlawn is a public housing community in my city and my church wanted to intercede and help their community. Our church decided that every Tuesday throughout the summer we would go out to Broadlawn to eat, talk, and play with the kids from the neighborhood. After some nagging from friends and family, I decided to tag along one Tuesday to help.…

During the PAL orientation meeting I learned that PAL wasn’t just about mentoring children at local elementary schools but also providing service to the community. I decided to volunteer at the local women shelter called Women In Need in my free time. Some days I would volunteer in the office, stuffing folders while other days I would work in childcare taking care of children while their parents were away. One day in particular, I was in charge of childcare one afternoon. There were about five children; one of these children stood out to me.…

It was a Saturday morning March 17, 1996 I was eight months in my mother’s tummy and my due date was in mid April. Uncle Benito had the crazy idea of going to the snow all because my mother had never seen the snow. My mother told me of a hill she sled down from, a great slope that didn’t leave her feeling to good “No me siento muy bien.” My uncle rushed her to Granada Hills Hospital on the morning of March 19, 1996; I was born seven pounds at eight minutes until eight.…

According to Anderson and Holt-Reynolds (1995), student teachers are not aware of their values and beliefs and their impact on teacher’s practice. On reflection, I realized that I myself have evolved within the last one year and my belief about teaching children has changed to working with children. I have discarded my naïve beliefs (Brownlee, et al., 2000), and have developed my early childhood education philosophy on the theories and philosophies I have studied so far. I shall critically examine three aspects of my early childhood philosophy in this essay.…

As far back as I can remember teaching young children has always been a passion of mine. I remember going with my mom to her school where she taught Pre- K on my days off of school and being so excited to engage and work with the students. Watching them learn new things and seeing how excited they get when they are able to do something helped me to realize that I wanted to be the person to help them achieve their goals. My primary focus is the elementary grades since I enjoy their innocence and willingness to try new things even when they know it is difficult for them. Young children seem to have a passion to explore their surroundings and are able to look at different situations with an open mind.…

I know teaching is my passion because I have talked about working with children since I was young. It is cliché, but I truly want to be able to make a difference in as many lives as I can. I have found comfort in the fact that even if I end up disliking teaching in the classroom, I know there are many other options out there for me. Museum education and government jobs with ODJFS are just two options of many that I could get into and still have a positive impact on many children’s lives. I am very excited for the journey of becoming an early childhood education teacher, and cannot wait to see what my future…

Through the Eyes of a Child There are some events in our lives we do not understand and cannot fully process until we can look back with the experience and wisdom of adulthood. Often these events are remembered in vivid detail and become the catalyst for future decisions. I was born the second child of five with an older brother, two younger brothers and a younger sister. We lived in an average home, in an average neighborhood, and we made do with what we had. In a family of seven, space was a premium commodity and I pleaded with my parents for a space of my own.…

One of the first, and most severe cases of child abuse I witnessed as an educator came during my second year as the elementary and middle school principal. This was something I had never witnessed nor was it ever talked about by my parents growing up. I was blessed to have been surrounded with some really awesome teachers in the elementary and middle school and we were able to support each other during this troubling time. For a small, rural school, we had some really talented individuals who were able to do some really amazing things with such limited resources for our students.…
