Personal Narrative: Congressional Art Competition

As a child, my summers consisted of “cooking food for the soul” and creating skits with my younger brother at Gran-Gran’s, my great-grandmother’s home. Her home is where I learned to cook the best macaroni and cheese, dressing, and banana pudding in the world! I also perfected my own banana nut pancakes. On any given day, while the food was in the oven, my brother and I would sit in her basement, writing a new script or song, and rehearsing it nonstop. When we moved from Michigan to Nevada in 2008, my creative side went into full gear. I gained an interest in photography, drawing, and TV/Film, while continuing to experiment with different and more challenging recipes. It was time for the Congressional Art Competition, which allows high school students around the country to compete with various works of art. I had created a piece titled Las Vegas just for a fun class project; however, my teacher approached me about submitting the piece to the competition. To my surprise, my piece placed second in the competition! As a winner, my photograph was displayed in the Capitol building one year. This accolade gave me confidence that I had not previously held. A year later I was accepted into Las Vegas Academy. Now I have the opportunity to perform and express myself creatively every day with other like-minded students. This has helped me look at various problems in an entirely different perspective. Today, I always think creatively, even towards the smallest things like creating a more efficient chore chart at home or a game to help a student I am tutoring. Creativity is a road that only allows unique perspectives, slight risks, and self-expression. This is the route that I have taken most of my life; nevertheless, I do not plan on turning back anytime
