Personal Narrative: Confirmation

Improved Essays
I was raised my entire life as a Roman Catholic. However, my curious nature led me to always take its teaching with a grain of salt. In Catholicism, there is a sacrament called Confirmation, intended to strengthen a Catholic’s faith and relationship with God. Part of this holy sacrament required me to attend a retreat with other fellow teenagers who were also on the journey to becoming closer to God. The retreat’s goal was to mentally prepare us for a lifelong commitment to our faith. My church’s confirmation class was joined with over a hundred kids from other neighboring churches. The majority of the kids were highly religious in their quest to become a messenger of God, but I was not. I was instead thinking about all of the other

I was in a Bible school apprentice program in PA, I wasvery angryabout many things and I knew if I did not find a way to put anger behind me it would consume my life. While at school I soughtout the student counselor and he began to answer questions I had about faith, God and my hurting angry heart. He walked me though many struggles, hewas tender yet direct.…

The closeness and intimacy of the churchgoers bonded in unity by their faith was evident. Motivated by their desire to learn and love Christ, they created a personal and friendly space in which one could feel safe and embraced. Through emphasis on the Word and its preaching, the service thoroughly integrated the principal beliefs of Christianity; particularly revelation, the divinity and humanity of Christ, and salvation, within its rituals and various aspects of…

As an ignorant young adult, I wasn’t very outgoing; I was always the shy student, the one who always got bullied and I wouldn’t really talk to anyone. When I turned fourteen, my parents informed me I was to attend confirmation classes. I wasn’t exactly enthused at the new that I would attend it for two years. To add to these, wonderful news; my older brother was going with me too. Goody.…

In attempt to develop range in my observation of support groups, I once again found myself returning to an old stomping ground. Throughout my years in high school, I dedicated several hours a week to my local church in a growth group for high school girls. Although I currently experience mixed emotions with religion, I recalled how influential it was during my teenaged years to have such support, convincing me to return to observe a group to identify ways in why it was so helpful for me during difficult moments in my life. Luckily, my previous growth group leader was still leading groups and graciously accepted my request to be a guest that following week. Meeting once a week, the purpose of these groups was to discuss the Bible and life issues, but based on personal experience, these groups offered much more than a few life lectures.…

The Dilemma with Measuring Sin This assignment covers a summary of three thoughts with two centered on reaching the lost with a message of Jesus Christ and another focused on the conversion experience from the works of three different authors. My effort in discovering a common theme to discuss was somewhat lost because of the direction in which each author approached sharing their information. However, in effort to complete a single cohesive flow I will discuss each situation independently and then close with a summary of all. I will however, intertwine deliberations that resonated in me why doing this assignment which on some occasions seemed to resonate across each piece of material.…

James Fowler developed a theory that explores six stages of spiritual development. The last stage, universalizing faith is characterized by an ability to overcome specific belief systems and “experience a sense of connection with all beings” (Balswick, King, & Reimer, 2005, p.272). It is also characterized by a commitment to overcoming division. This stage of spiritual development is something I desire. When I consider what inside of me hinders me from operating from this place it is usually my insecurities, or not fully knowing my identity in Christ.…

I remember the squeaky sound my new, white Mary-Jane shoes made as I walked down the aisle toward the altar. The sleeves of my first communion dress itched my shoulders as I anticipated eating the “body of Christ” bread for the first time. This ceremony, my first holy communion, was the last of my religious activities until high school. My father was a traditional Catholic while my mother was more open and spiritual. After my communion I realized I resonated more with my mother’s beliefs than my father’s.…

In different religious cultures all around the world, there are particular events in children’s lives that mark their entrance into adulthood. In my Catholic faith experience, I underwent this coming-of-age process through my Confirmation, which took place in May of my junior year. After studying Catholicism in religion class for eleven years and growing personally in my faith, I was finally considered an adult member of the Church. Several of my friends experienced their coming-of-age years before I did, and the essence of their entrance into spiritual adulthood differed greatly from mine, due to the fact that they were Jewish. In seventh-grade, two good friends of mine, Shira and Olivia, attempted to explain a bat mitzvah to me.…

This module did more to reaffirm my belief in God and God’s word, the Bible. Approximately seven years ago, my beliefs were not as strong as they are as of today. While growing up, my mother would take my brother and me to church every Sunday and we would attend Wednesday night services as well. Although, I was raised in a two parent home, my father did not attend church with us. This was mostly because he worked on Sundays.…

Even though many churches have youth and/or teen ministries, those ministries only make tangential contact with adults and the mission of the church. But instead of seizing the opportunity to remedy this situation, the church has compounded the problem. The problem is isolation, and the church’s solution, though well-intentioned, has resulted in more isolation. Even within the church’s programs and leadership, many youths were lost because they were made to feel as if they opinions and roles counted. Many of the members felt that their roles in the church didn’t give much input and they were feeling as if they were given superficial feedbacks.…

For my final assignment, I chose to attend Sacred Heart Parish which is a Catholic Church located in Bridgeport, PA. I made the decision to attend Sacred Heart at the recommendation of a close family member, who is an active member of said church. Prior to attending this religious service, it had been approximately 8 years since the last time I had visited a religious institution. The first thing that I noticed upon my arrival was the appearance of the structure. Sacred Heart Parish exhibited many characteristics of a very traditional European Gothic Cathedral, in fact, it quite strongly resembled a medieval castle from the outside, which certainly allowed it to stand out among the rather modern brickwork structures that were far more prevalent…

I was gradually starting to have the capacity to relate myself and my encounters to every one of the lessons and readings that would be verbalized to me amid the masses. I was standing in the middle of the hall at Church on the Rock in Toronto, Canada, a completely foreign environment where I knew no one other than my father who stood beside me throughout a religious experience that has in some sense, changed my outlook on Christianity. From a young age my father had instilled the importance of faith within our household, motivating my family and I to attend church every Sunday and most importantly, to read the Bible and apply the principles to our daily life. After years of instilling these values, I gradually picked up a few of his proposals and made it an objective to read the Bible in my senior year of high school. As I began reading, starting from the New Testament, I noticed a shift in my outlook on Christianity…

I didn’t go to church regularly as I had been uninvited by my grandparents when I was three. To make up for that, I attended Vacation Bible School every summer, I prayed every night, and I read my children’s Bible often. It was at this phase that I listened to my dad for spiritual advice because I was concerned about my lack of church attendance. My father, a non-practicing Catholic with a disdain for Catholic tradition, told me that if I followed God’s word and did the best I could to be a good person, then there was no need for me to worry about church. That was all it took to ease…
