During my last few years of middle school, I stumbled upon an engineering and technology workshop when visiting high schools. It was then when I first saw computer programming in action: a group of students clicking away on their keyboards, formulating lines of code. With each passing instant, I was captivated as their nimble fingers glided across the keyboard. Knowing little about this field of study, I turned around to my father, bombarding him with questions. However, he only replied with: “that’s for boys, don’t bother.” After we left for home, the thoughts of programming lingered behind. Years later, in high school, I now major in computer

After years of convincing myself that the robotics team of Slidell High was an organization unfit for me, I finally overcame my robotic-phobia and enlisted. The team moved with a rhythm unmatched by any other team, grinding and welding and programming without bounds. The finest gumbo of human achievement, the robotics team accepted my flavor unwaveringly. Although I felt that I was needed with the labeling and organizing, I had no particular impact on the gumbo until computer science discovered me. Programming, that hidden language of the universe that ranges from DNA to cellphones, instilled into me newfound awe at the complexity of life.…

High school changes people. They express themselves, become opinionated, and they start to look at the world differently as they experience things they have never encountered before. A wise Oliver Wendell Holmes said, “Man’s mind stretched to a new idea never goes back to its original dimensions.” This quote is an excellent way to describe my experience in high school.…

Arriving home after a long and monotonous day of school, I lob my backpack against my trusty chair and it collapses to its side. Conversely, I find myself wanting to do the same. What I had learned and what I had to do were a couple of the things that went through my mind as I reflected on the day. School work was something I could not have said that I found fun or interesting, however, I could also not have said that I found the work I did insignificant, right? The work in high school all seemed like preparation for college, but I was not sure if that was what I really wanted.…

It wasn’t until high school that I really began to understand how I could actively utilize that pragmatic and enthusiastic part of myself. I reveled in the increasingly abstract problems and concepts from my math and science classes that discouraged my peers. Despite that, the only class that managed to completely captivate my attention was my computer science. Every problem that I encountered in that class seemed like a thousand piece puzzle with only the tiniest of clues to hint at a way I could solve the problem; the challenge was intoxicating. Equipped with greater knowledge about computers and code from my teacher, I could take on more daunting challenges and projects than I could have ever imagined when I was nine.…

College Career Feasibility Report The passion that I have for technology began to prosper at age five when I received my first cellular communication device, as a gift, mostly for safety purposes. After this, I began to collect cell phones, and shortly thereafter I got my first laptop, followed by my first PlayStation 3, my love for technology grew on and on. Before my first day at Tennessee High School, I knew that I sought to take as many computer-related classes as possible, and that is exactly what I have done. However, it was not until I had classes with a teacher named Mrs. Del Gaudio that I knew for sure Computer Science was the profession that I would be working towards doing for the rest of my life.…

Melissa Koch states that there are many different reasons for females not pursuing a career in computer science. One of Koch’s reasons is that the “media depict men as experts in technology”. When students are asked to name females that have jobs that have to do with computers, they are usually not able to name one at all. But when they are asked to name a male who is a person associated with a with computers, they can immediately name people such as Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, Mark Zuckerberg, Edward Snowden or any of the other famous people. This difference of names that are listed show young females that there is no place in society for a female interested in the computer industry.…

The ability to understand programming and all of its algorithms will grant anybody the power to keep up with technology. This is why elementary schools need computer science classes integrated into their curriculum. Teaching young children how to program will evolve the world in new ways by allowing these individuals to create new applications and technology. Since there are not any computer science related courses offered in elementary schools, they are restricted from the opportunity to learn code because they have not been exposed to it yet. Once they reach levels of schooling higher than elementary, it will possibly be too late for individuals to want to learn programming because the children will be growing mentally and lack the motivation…
