Personal Narrative: Completing An Ultramarathon

Improved Essays
Completing an ultramarathon is a feat for anyone. Everyone thought it would be impossible for a 16 year old girl. So why not? As a varsity cross country runner I am no stranger to running. The contradictory love-hate relationship strains the mind and body like to no other. My junior year cross country began to lose its appeal. The distances, the races, and the running in general had become monotonous. I live by the phrase “To be outstanding- you must become comfortable with being uncomfortable.” I constantly seek new challenges to push myself beyond normal bounds. I wanted to achieve something extraordinary. The ultramarathon was in six months, and meant thirty-one and a half miles of trail waiting to be conquered.
I trained for months, aiming to condition myself for the nonstop running. This was like nothing I had attempted before. My friends thought I was insane, and they were probably right. You have to be insane to subject your mind and body to something that excruciating. I was told to pick a marathon instead, but people run those everyday. I knew I was well within my limits to complete one. An ultramarathon was so far out of my comfort zone I couldn’t pass up the opportunity. Very few people can complete one, as it requires a tremendous amount of grit, passion, and

I was the only runner under 26 years old, and clearly lacking in the special equipment others carried. I had six goals to accomplish during the race: 1) Do not die. 2) Finish. 3) Do not sprint the first mile. 4) Run the first 10 miles without stopping. 5) Do not overthink it, and 6) Do not die. I managed to stay true to these goals, though I’m still unsure about numbers one and six. The ultramarathon tested me in ways I never imagined. Seven and a half hours of straight running meant my heart, soul, grit, and commitment were all trampled on numerous times, and I would be lying if I said I didn't want to

Three years ago, as a freshman, I decided to join cross country. This decision has shaped my high school career through the friends I chose to the activities I participated in. Cross country is not an easy sport, though. It requires physical endurance, but more importantly, the mental strength to push past and overcome the obstacle of pain. By sticking with this sport, mental toughness has permeated who I am and helped me go beyond the standards and work my way through trivial challenges and huge endeavors alike.…

And this isn’t even your everyday running to the fridge for a snack within the 20-second time span between Netflix episodes. We’re talking a whopping 26.2 miles. So surely everyone who runs this distance without pleading for death must be out of their mind, right? If that is the case then the elite, prestigious cult of marathon runners is clearly insane.…

It was the day of the Larz Anderson Invitational 2014. After the surprisingly normal day of school, the Park School cross country team headed towards Larz Anderson. We walked outside as a team and the air was dry and cold. The strong breeze sent chills down my spine and swept the orange leaves from side to side. Upon arrival, I saw the vast number of my competitors.…

From my last 3 years of running cross county I have learned a lot of things. One is that you should never give up, second is that if you work hard enough then you can achieve whatever you put your mind to, and third is how you can go from disliking something to loving something. How I've learned these things from cross county is when I first started cross country, my sophomore year I couldn't run to save my life. Coach would always time us on how fast we could run two miles and I would always be last and be so far behind everyone else which was quite embarrassing but I couldn't help it I had just started and I'd never ran before in my life, at my very first meet I couldn't even run the first mile and I ended up having to drop out. After that I didn't like cross county at all because I wasn't good at it…

Bang, the gun sounds. I sprint out of my box, following teammates in pursuit of the leader. The pack of cross country runners appears to envelop me from my parent’s sight. I hurdle toward the first flag, passing competitors right and left. All the rest is a blur, just the pounding of my heart and the thumping of feet as I run, breathing heavier and heavier, twisting and turning through the trails to reach the chute.…

I realized that I could not just transition from a couch potato to running a 5k after running once. I had to be patient and learn how to pace myself. I had to find the perfect balance in my training so I could avoid pushing myself too hard and not pushing myself enough. Before this experience, I would always push myself too hard in my schoolwork and other activities I participated in. I would cram in studying the night before the test and get frustrated with myself if I did not understand the material right away.…
