We figured that my niece would have to see the error of her ways, get help, take classes, go to group therapy sessions, find a job and conquer her case plan. How long could that possibly take six months? The good news was that my sister who is the children’s Grandmother would be there to help us, getting the babies from daycare and coming home to help out while I juggled homework. We had it all planned out. My father, husband and I took turns taking my niece to her court dates and classes.…
Look Through a Broader Lens For centuries, people have arrived on American land with little more than a suitcase and a dream of a better life. The promise of freedom and equal opportunity continues to attract foreigners to America, even though many thought that with hard work and dedication could lead an American immigrant to success. Having reached the promised land, immigrants find themselves faced with unimaginable obstacles. My family came to America to pursue a better life. Both of my parents came from middle class family in Dalian, China.…
Growing up I faced many obstacles coming from an immigrant family. Never did I think I could overcome the obstacles and say that the little girl who went to one of the worst rated elementary schools in the area was now a rising senior at George Mason University. I grew up with both my parents and three sisters, and in my eyes we were an average “normal” family. I never saw my parents struggle or felt like I was missing anything, and not until I was older did I understand our situation. I did not fully grasp that my parents were “different” because they were immigrants until I realized they could not help me with my homework, engage in a conversation with my teachers, nor participate in all the things my classmates parents did.…

As I got out of the car, I stretched and my legs wobbled from six hours in a cramped car. It took a while for my eyes to adjust to the bright sun. I looked up at the hotel and started to believe it may have been worth the long hours of boredom. Nah. I wish I could have dreamed through the whole…
Persuasive Piece In “The Good Earth,” the idea that obligation and duty to one’s family are very important is shown throughout the text. At the beginning of the story, Wang Lung presents his grandfather’s current physical state. His grandfather is very old and dependent upon others, and as his son, Wang Lung’s duty is to care for the old man throughout his old age until he dies. Wang Lung takes care of him throughout the rest of the story until he dies.…
It was well known, many immigrants faced great distress and even death to get to the United States, the land of the free. Really, if you think about long enough, it becomes clear, despite the hard trip, for over a century German immigrated by the hundreds of thousands comes to the United States to give their family a better life. To pay the remainder of our debt, my husband, becoming indentured servitude in America for several years until their debt was paid. My coming to america Immigration to a new country is always a difficult decision, and whoever experienced it understands what kind of sacrifices people go through. When I left Russia at 18, I thought I was going to be in paradise. I thought I was going to live the American dream like I saw in Hollywood movies. On my plane ride to Los Angeles, I thought I was going to be just like Carrie Bradshaw from “Sex and the City,” living in a big city, wearing designer clothes, and having a fabulous boyfriend. However, to my disappointment I found out that my life was not going to be what I was expecting.…
The idea of being told that I had to work for the first time made me want to eat glass; but could it possibly have turned out for the better? In England, when you reach 10th grade you participate in a nationally accepted program called 'Work Experience'. ' Work Experience' is when you work just like you would if you were legally an adult except with this program it only lasts a week. After 2 weeks of tireless searching I landed a job at Ariya Capital; an experienced developer and investor in clean energy and infrastructure projects throughout sub-Saharan Africa. It was actually much more advanced than any job I ever thought of getting.…
As a child growing up in Rhode Island, the smallest state in the Union, the idea of a vast planet brimming with civilization and culture was more like something out of a fairy tale than it was reality. So, when my father announced that we would be leaving the country to go to Scotland, the home of his and my ancestors, my world began to expand at a rapid pace. This trip could not have been timed more perfectly. The summer of 2007 marked the end of fourth grade, my first year at Saint Mary Academy Bay View.…
My journey began two years ago, when I moved to the United States after going through a lot of process and security checks and after waiting for almost five years finally my family and I made it to the United States. Coming to America affected my family and me with some good and in a bad ways, one of the good ways America has affected my family and me is we finally feel safe and we’re not afraid that we might get killed or bombed in any second, one of the worst ways is America an open country and it has a bad influence on some teenagers who might follow the wrong paths in life. The struggles, my family have gone through has taught me to appreciate everything I have and the vast amount of opportunities presented to me.…
