Earlier in the day, I was in the middle of a sleepover with my step-brother, I was in the pool playing with my step-brother, then my mother told us that there was another hurricane coming to Puerto Rico. It seemed that it was more powerful than Irma. My brothers and I were scared. Because we didn't want to go back to the situation not having electricity and water. When my sleepover was over, my mother and I started to pack up to go to our grandparents’ house.

I did not know what to do, in the house. Just talking to my Uncle? Or play on my Nintendo 3DS? My brother wakes up. I was happy to see him. Because, as brothers, we need to have a conversation. My Uncle was talking about a new game that is going to come in September. I did not want to be in that conversation. I was more focused listening to the radio than a video game. The whole family went outside the house; we wanted to look all what Maria did to our house. All the broken trees were down, broken shutters on the ground. I saw places that there is no hope. Family and friends that lose their house. Clothing, food everything. I saw chaos! This what I saw in this island. To conclude, there are a couple of questions in my head; Is this going to be how Puerto Rico looks? How many more weeks were are going to be without electricity and water? Have we lost

From the times I hear my grandfather singing Vicente Fernandez in the shower, to the times my grandmother cooks homemade enchiladas, arroz con frijoles, and salsas, I am constantly reminded of the beautiful culture that I proudly belong to and hope to share with CCS. I would contribute my Mexican/Puerto Rican American identity in terms of expressing my culture’s music, art, and food. Coming from a close-knit Latin American family, I know I will thrive in this small, intimate residential living atmosphere. Being a bisexual person of color, I've learned to be tolerant and love others despite our differences in race, religion, ethnicity, or socioeconomic levels. One foot rooted in urban Puerto Rican heritage and the other having been later immersed in the Southern black experience as an adult, I have learned to merge the conceivably disparate cultures of my family. Each afforded me a unique point of view, developing the self-assurance that has empowered me to succeed in the face of adversity.
