Personal Narrative: Come To The Key Club

Improved Essays
Being a silly freshman in high school who hadn’t a clue what to do, I would typically just go home and have hours of free time. Then one day I came across an announcement at school that said “Come to the Key Club meeting every Wednesday, there’ll be free candy”. Of course I was interested the moment I saw free candy; who doesn't want free candy? Besides, I wanted to be a part of a club at this opportunity-filled place called high school. I joined then, and stayed for all four years. Looking back, I’m surprised that I stayed in a club whose initial attraction was a promise of candy. I found out that this club had much more to offer than candy; there were others who had an immense enthusiasm for community service. They enjoyed helping others …show more content…
Through my commitment to Key club, I was able to gain more recognition from our community. This year we have been asked to do more community service opportunities around town that we haven't gotten in past years. We have helped a non-profit organization, called Simple Gesture, where we packed and sorted 8,000 lbs of canned food for families in need around our community. We had over 10 volunteers show up, more than what was asked for and they were satisfied with the amount of hard work which we, that Key Clubbers have put in. I was also proud of us this year when we helped out at the Veterans dinner party because not only did more than 7 members attend, but they invited their friends to come along. This increased our membership by 6 more students, something that is always great news for a growing club. My board and I have also been able to get more underclassmen to be interested in this club. I've noticed many don't join clubs for fear of not fitting in, but we made sure everyone who came to a meeting felt the acceptance, saw our enthusiasm, and had the curiosity to come back. Seeing the results of being outgoing and friendly to all members of Key Club, I was inspired to reach out to the middle schoolers. I was able to meet with a few members who had a club at the middle school just like Key Club and invited them to some of our service events. This inspired them to someday

The subculture I chose is the FFA which is also known as the future farmer organization. I started in this organization when I was a sophomore in high school. The organization starts in the middle school and goes into high school. My high school isn’t big on FFA, so I had to find out through a mutual friend. When I started in this club I didn’t know what to except so I was shy at first and didn’t volunteer for activates as much as I should have.…

Key Club International profoundly changed my life, teaching me many of my core values. After my lost at convention, I was ecstatic to hear that I was appointed to oversee a district of over 13,500 members, and 300 clubs as the Membership Growth & Reactivation Chair of the Pacific Northwest District of Key Club International. I was able to gain a professional perspective from this prominent role, that was vital to the functions and logistics of clubs and membership experience in the largest geographic district of Key Club International. Prior to this, I felt sabotaged by an election that I lost at District Convention.…

Through this club I was able to serve as a mentor for various middle school students. Every Friday I would go to a middle school classroom and spend breakfast with them. During this time I would play games with them or talk to them about anything they wanted guidance with. The really cool thing about this program was that I didn't have to go a middle school, but because my school also has a middle school level. I was able to build relationships with students I see around…

I joined Anchor Club as a follower. I attended my first club meeting with a friend and committed without hesitation. For years, I had been one of those people who would or wouldn’t do something based on the amount of friends I had participating in the same thing. By sophomore year, this began to change. By junior year, that part of me was almost nonexistent – and now, I find myself to be an entirely different person, not basing my own actions on others, and being confident in myself, encouraging new experiences of my own.…

Sitting in Portola with a group of my hometown friends I start to build up my courage. I knew I had to complete my experiment, but I quickly learned how difficult it is to break a social taboo. It makes you uncomfortable and nervous. I could not help to think the impression it might leave on the unknown participant. I was worried about the looks I may receive or the comments that could be potentially made.…

Prior to my involvement with S.O.L, I hardly engaged in community service events because I was too shy to volunteer alone. Many of my friends had similar issues, they want to help the community but they didn’t know how to or they were too afraid to do it alone. I believed that S.O.L was the perfect vehicle to get my friends as well as myself involved in community events. Last year S.O.L participated in over six community service events as a group, seeing my friends and members volunteer together in the community made me very proud. My members as well as my friends became productive and involved community members and soon they were proposing the events the club should do next.…

I’m grateful to have found a club called Junior Teen Institute-- an organization that promotes healthy lifestyles and peer leadership, back at my former school. The mentor often lectured us and her words profoundly motivated me, inspiring ideas that I decided to put into action. For the next week, I arduously wrote inspirational and encouraging words on sticky notes and contacted friends for help executing the plan. Soon, with permission, we were running around the school in the early morning, putting notes on lockers and using leftovers to decorate classrooms.…

Over time, the club expanded as numerous of my peers started to join and opened up about their depression, anxiety, broken homes, suicide attempts, etc. Myself as well as the President of the club were able to create a loving, cheerful, and safe environment for every single person who stepped into the room, we comforted, encouraged, and provided the help they needed. In G213, we were able to provide a home to those who felt like they never had one before. Even though I didn’t have a tremendous influence on the lives of 3000 kids who attended my school, I was able to have an influence on the lives of those 30 kids who without my help would be stuck in their never-ending cycle of loneliness and depression. My impact on Neshaminy High School has been and always will be in room…

On Wednesday July 8th, I engaged in something that I never necessarily would have done before, I purposely brought attention to myself. I engaged in breaking a social norm and called attention to my behavior, and by extension my appearance. I allowed myself to become the focus of someone’s attention because of my blatant disregard of the social norms that have been set up within our society. Alongside with my partner, Andrea Armengol, we quietly and stealthily entered an elevator in the Miami Regional Dialysis Center building at Jackson North Hospital at around 1 o’clock in the afternoon. There was an array of people whom my partner and I encountered inside of the elevator, one of the youngest unknowing participant in our experiment could…

Key Clubbers all have a similar interest in doing good for others, and thus have banded together into one large, diverse family.
