Personal Narrative: Columbus Day

Improved Essays
Morning Josh and Fanyons! Marilyn asked me to hold the fort while she is on vacation this week and I'm happy to help as she is making her way to unite with old friends, make new ones and just have fun this week! So here goes. . . Today is Columbus Day and that seems the perfect holiday to celebrate as our fellow adventuring Fanyons are packing for and traveling to GRL in Atlanta. They are trekking across the United States, from Canada, across the Pacific and the Atlantic to meet up with Facebook and GR friends who have become the real deal. That puts me in mind of the how small our world is and how fortunate we are to experience people and cultures from around the world here. We have Josh to thank for friending each of us and allowing us to …show more content…
I worked like crazy in the garden, made albondigas soup and cooked a pot roast yesterday, which is a good thing for the upcoming weekend. My Costa Rican coffee is outstanding this morning and the weather is gorgeous with blue skies and temperatures in the low 60s and highs in the mid-80s, which is perfect for more gardening and some reading on the patio. Yep, already looking forward to the weekend! I'm so happy Marilyn asked me to do this in her absence because it has me contemplating the things I love most. Every day my friends post images of pets, wildlife, flowers, crafts, quotes and children and I recognize it's a joyful expression of themselves. I love that. Steve and Felix take photographs of sunsets and nature, Marilyn shares music and big cats, Haldis photographs flowers of every type and color, Johanna has shared her watercolor work and cover art, Gail shares her love of the moon, while David and Marc share their joy of art collecting and cooking. And that brings me to the artwork on my FB wall. Recently someone asked where I find it and why I do it. Well, I look everywhere and anywhere for art because it's all around us. I have to emotionally connect — I get lost in the message of a piece — with the artwork because I only share what I love. Sometimes the piece is vibrant, filled with movement and sometimes it's subtle and introspective. I see the love of art as personal revelation and a promise of respite from the everyday grind. When I post, it's more than page gilding, it's me conversing with you. Do you feel that way about what you post on your page every

Today, I worked maintenance at Temperance River State Park. I started, by doing the morning rounds, cleaning vaults, checking recycling and then campground checks. My supervisor Kenny Giannini had off, so it was just me and Chris, who was working the visitors center today. Once finished with rounds, I was given the task of cleaning Berglund Wayside. After the busy memorial weekend, the waysides got hit hard with traffic, so they needed to be checked and cleaned.…

When looking at this week’s reading, one thing that stood out to me was Christopher Columbus and the Spaniard involvement with the natives. Growing up, most of learn how great Christopher Columbus is for finding the Americas. Even if he did not step foot on what now is considered the United States, he is still celebrated nationally and respected. We celebrate him to the point of having a national holiday commemorating the day he landed in the Americas. He can be highly celebrated for what he did, but not many talk about whom he was.…

So it finally snowed! I’m happy that it finally did and I built a snowman during the storm and it looks kind of…squared you could say. Since the snow is heavy, more of the leaves are now fallen off and it’s starting to look like winter. Today I went to my grandparents’ house to spend the few nights until thanksgiving. While driving out there, the corn fields and the bean fields were all covered with snow, you could tell that the deer were out and about since you could clearly see the footprints in the snow.…

When it comes to Christopher Columbus, he is a controversial figure. On one hand, Columbus is not a noble figure when analyzing his past. On the other hand, Columbus is a great explorer and a hero according to some text books in various schools . When comparing Ridley Scott’s 1992 film with Columbus’s diary, there are clear differences between the two. Ridley Scott’s film clearly sides with the positive depiction of Columbus.…

The artwork I chose to imagine is Van Gogh’s famous oil painting called Starry Night. It was painted in June of 1889 and has grown to be known as one of his most famous paintings. Van Gogh was a post-impressionist and painted Starry Night from memory in his apartment. The view is of a village from a window in an asylum. I chose this painting because it has always been hanging in my Aunt’s living room.…

In his book The Columbian Orator in 1797, Caleb Bingham refers a conversation between a slave and a master. In part of the dialogue, the master said that “it is in the order of Providence that one man should become subservient to another.” The slave responded that “the robber who puts a pistol to your breast may make just the same plea. Providence gives him a power over your life and property.” This dialogue states a significant concept that the slavery is not natural because that just a kind of power to make that happen.…

Age Of Exploration; Heroic or Heinous? I woke up late that Monday morning, basking in the fact that there was no school. The car ride there felt like a long eight hours. But I knew it would be worth it because I only went to Philadelphia once, and that was when I was one years old. I’m glad we left from my grandma’s house in Meadville, Pennsylvania, or else it would have taken about fourteen hours just to get there. And that would definitely not be fun. We left Sunday to get to my grandma’s house for the week we normally stay there, but instead, my mom, my sister Sydney, my brother Jack, and I left for Philadelphia on Wednesday, August sixth.…
